This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Act as RLF’s primary public policy strategist and representative in Sacramento.
• Conduct research, analysis, and develop policies and campaigns to fulfill organizational objectives.
• Track legislation, engage with stakeholders, and prepare analytical reports.
• Build and sustain robust relationships with legislators, legislative staff, the governor's office, state agency leaders, and other key decision makers.
• Keep abreast of the legislative process, budgetary matters, and the regulatory environment.
• Advocate for decision makers regarding specific policy and budgetary issues.
• Support program staff in creating and implementing successful policy and public funding initiatives.
• Provide counsel to staff on policy strategy, evaluate feasibility, alignment, and strategic leverage points for their objectives.
• Train team members on legislative and budget processes, policy analysis, decision-making protocols, advocacy, and political dynamics.
• Collaborate with partners to formulate and execute policy solutions.
• Identify avenues for RLF to broaden its influence.
• Organize and engage in statewide coalitions, task forces, and special projects.
• Recruit and oversee contract lobbyists and other consultants as required.
• Manage special projects as assigned.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, and/or advocacy campaigns.
• In-depth understanding of California's policymaking, state budgeting, regulatory processes, and associated politics.
• Strong knowledge of California’s environmental, climate, and conservation issues.
• Willingness and enthusiasm to navigate complex policy, stakeholder, and political environments.
• Proven experience in establishing trust-based relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including policymakers, government representatives, Tribes/Tribal communities, non-profit partners, and the private sector.
• Experience in engaging with diverse coalitions and executing effective campaigns for policy and funding results.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
