Platform Engineer – Kubernetes, GitOps

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Design and develop the Kubernetes platform across various self-hosted clusters.

• Manage self-hosted Kubernetes clusters from start to finish, including upgrades, CNI networking, storage solutions, load balancing, and DNS management.

• Provision and manage the lifecycle of infrastructure using OpenTofu and Terragrunt.

• Create and review infrastructure modules while overseeing state management and plan/apply workflows.

• Develop and sustain GitOps workflows with Argo CD, utilizing app-of-apps and Helm-based deployments.

• Operate and enhance core platform services, including Harbor, OpenBao, and Zitadel.

• Build and refine platform observability using Grafana, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Alloy.

• Contribute to actionable alerting systems.

• Manage secrets, backups, and data services, such as CNPG/PostgreSQL and Barman.

• Collaborate with product engineering teams to transition services from Ansible/VM-based deployments to Kubernetes.

• Establish reusable deployment standards.

• Enhance the developer experience through comprehensive documentation, templates, golden paths, and self-service platform capabilities.

• Troubleshoot platform-related issues across infrastructure, networking, and application layers as 2nd-level support.

• Engage in on-call responsibilities to maintain stable platform operations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Several years of experience in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or DevOps.

• Hands-on experience managing self-hosted/self-managed Kubernetes in production environments, including cluster upgrades, networking, storage, and troubleshooting without reliance on a managed control plane.

• Daily practice of GitOps using Git pull requests and Argo CD or Flux reconciliation.

• Strong foundational knowledge of Git, including branching, code reviews, and rebasing.

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools for distributed systems, such as Grafana, Prometheus/Mimir, and Loki.

• Proficient scripting and automation skills, such as with Nix and Bash.

• Familiarity with CI/CD workflows and production deployment methodologies, including progressive rollouts, rollbacks, and health checks.

• Excellent problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and a proactive mindset toward ownership.

• Very good written and spoken English proficiency.

• Completed IT apprenticeship or degree, or equivalent qualifications gained through professional experience (desirable).

• Experience with Talos Linux or other minimal/immutable Kubernetes operating systems.

• Experience in bare-metal operations, including RAID/LVM storage, out-of-band access, and hardware lifecycle management.

• Familiarity with secrets management solutions, such as OpenBao/Vault and External Secrets Operator.

• Experience with PostgreSQL operators, such as CNPG, and backup/restore procedures.

• Prior experience with large-scale infrastructure migrations.

• Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments.

• Must be located within the EU/EEA.
