This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.
• Operates with minimal supervision and possesses an intermediate-level approval authority to evaluate, accept, reject, or modify new and renewal business for moderately complex to complex Personal Lines policies while ensuring a profitable personal book of business.
• Assesses risk acceptability to make informed decisions based on underwriting guidelines, ensuring compliance with state regulations.
• Employs creativity and underwriting expertise to manage risks and retain business effectively.
• Forwards the most complex or higher-level coverage evaluations to senior staff or the Supervisor.
• Develops and nurtures ongoing relationships with agents with the objectives of: educating agents on underwriting philosophy, providing updates on product, service, and procedural changes, addressing compliance-related concerns, and discussing submission quality.
• Responsibilities include: receiving inbound calls from agents, making outbound calls to agents, and visiting agent offices.
• Analyzes loss ratios and growth for agents when considering agency exceptions.
• Collaborates with agents to rectify errors.
• Has the authority to adjust deductibles, raise premiums, cancel policies, or recommend additional training or counseling for agents when necessary.
• Reports any non-compliant or unethical behavior exhibited by agents.
• Partners with the Agency Performance Management team and Territory Managers to identify trends and patterns that could pose challenges.
• Works in conjunction with underwriting operations, sales, claims, and other business units to offer recommendations concerning products, systems, and performance as appropriate.
• May assist in training and mentoring less experienced staff members.
• May engage in special project teams and departmental initiatives.
• Completion of college-level coursework in Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience in an underwriting or sales environment, including independent agencies.
• Skills in analyzing, problem-solving, and making sound decisions.
• Proficiency in negotiating and resolving conflicts.
• Demonstrated expertise with Microsoft Office software applications.
• Knowledge of underwriting policies, procedures, and practices.
• Familiarity with property and casualty insurance terminology, contracts, and forms.
• Understanding of state insurance regulations and practices.
• Proficient in inspection techniques relevant to property and casualty insurance.
• Experience with insurance processing systems (i.e., IPM, Sales & Service Portal, PCMS, or similar).
• Ability to analyze quantitative measurements (loss ratio, production, and profitability).
• Understanding of the Fair Credit Reporting Act as it pertains to insurance.
• Capability to evaluate, accept, modify, reject, or cancel personal lines risks in line with underwriting guidelines.
• Ability to assess third-party documentation to determine the potential risk exposure to the Company.
• Skills in building, maintaining, and managing producer and customer relationships.
• Effective collaboration and communication abilities, both verbally and in writing, with key business partners.
• Capacity to identify and report non-compliant or unethical behavior by agents.
• Ability to work under pressure with strong attention to detail, completing tasks through decisive or prompt action.
• Proficient in preparing and presenting unit activity reports and recommendations to management.
