Payments Product Owner

Posted May 20

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• We are seeking a Senior Product Owner with substantial experience in digital ecommerce products and direct accountability for the payments and checkout domain.

• This role is not about merely managing tickets. We need someone who comprehends the business, questions established assumptions, communicates effectively with engineering while keeping user needs in focus, and recognizes that every lost conversion point in the checkout process relates to a product decision made (or overlooked).

• Additionally, we value your capabilities over your educational background 🎓. Whether you studied Journalism, Business, completed a Web Development bootcamp, or delved into Philosophy, what truly matters is your ability to deliver results, your thought process, and your achievements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience as a Product Owner or Product Manager in digital ecommerce, with at least 5 years of direct responsibility for checkout flows, conversion, or payments. This should reflect real product experience — not presentations, theoretical concepts, or brief consulting stints.

• Profound understanding of the online payments ecosystem, including PSPs (Worldpay, Stripe, Adyen, Redsys, Braintree…), virtual POS terminals, pricing models (interchange++, blended), and dispute/chargeback management. While you don't necessarily need to be a technical integrator, it's essential to grasp the underlying mechanisms and recognize how a PSP configuration change can significantly impact your authorization rate.

• Proven experience in optimizing the checkout funnel, including friction reduction, step-by-step drop-off analysis, UX improvements focused on conversion, payment error management, and effective status messaging. You can distinguish between a user abandoning due to payment reluctance and one leaving due to repeated form failures.

• **Frontend/UX technical** Knowledge of frontend concepts pertinent to checkout, such as page load performance and its influence on conversion, form validation patterns, cross-browser/device compatibility issues, and the effects of JavaScript-heavy implementations on payment widget rendering. You understand that a slow LCP in the payment phase is primarily a product issue, not just an engineering concern.

• Awareness of emerging payment methods and international markets, including BNPL (Klarna, Scalapay, Afterpay), digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bizum), open banking, and instant payments. You are knowledgeable about user preferences for payment methods in different countries, such as Germany versus Brazil, which influences your prioritization.

• Familiarity with relevant regulations, including PSD2, SCA (Strong Customer Authentication), 3DS2, and GDPR as they pertain to payment processes. While you don't need to be a legal expert, it's crucial to identify when business proposals conflict with compliance and how to navigate those issues without hindering the roadmap.

• Proficient in Agile methodologies and backlog management, with hands-on experience in Scrum/Kanban, crafting quality user stories, establishing well-defined Definition of Done, sprint management, and coordinating across Backend, Frontend, QA, and UX teams. You are comfortable using Jira and likely have strong opinions on optimizing its structure.

• A data-driven mindset: adept at interpreting dashboards, analyzing conversion metrics, rejection rates by PSP or payment method, processing times, and chargeback ratios. While not requiring you to be an analyst, you should know how to ask the right questions and interpret data to inform decisions.

• Capability to design and execute A/B tests within the checkout environment, including forming clear hypotheses, defining success metrics, analyzing results, and scaling successful strategies.

• An AI-native working mentality. You routinely integrate AI tools into your daily workflow, viewing them as genuine productivity enhancers. This includes using LLMs to draft and refine user stories, generate test cases, summarize research, or expedite PRD structuring. You are also skilled at evaluating AI-powered product features (e.g., smart payment routing, fraud detection models, personalized checkout experiences) and crafting effective prompts. Bonus points if you've explored how AI can enhance backlog management, sprint reporting, or stakeholder communication. We seek someone who proactively utilizes new tools rather than waiting for direction.

• Proficiency in both Spanish and English (written and spoken). While literary prowess isn't necessary, clear communication and understanding are essential, along with a sense of enjoyment in the process.

• Significant advantages include:

• Experience with API-level technical integrations with PSPs: webhooks, payment events, transaction state management, and retries. You comprehend the requests you make to Backend and their implications.

• Familiarity with analytics tools (Amplitude, Datadog, Mixpanel, GA4) utilized for payment funnel analysis.

• Background in CMPs and consent management within checkout flows (Didomi, OneTrust, or similar).

• Acquaintance with BI tools (Qlik, Looker, Tableau, Power BI) to create or analyze payment performance reports.

• Additional preferred qualifications:

• Experience in international payment method expansion projects: localization of checkout, integration of local methods, handling multiple currencies, and validating products in new markets.

• Knowledge of fraud prevention platforms (Ravelin, Ethoca, Kount, Forter, Signifyd, or similar).

• Experience with subscription products or recurring billing models, including renewal management, dunning, and upgrades/downgrades.

🏝️ Benefits

• Genuine ownership over a vital area. The checkout process is where business success is determined. You will have direct accountability and immediate impact.

• A company culture that values your input. If you thrive on ownership, justifying your decisions, and articulating the reasoning behind prioritization, you'll fit right in.

• A team that maintains high standards. We are dedicated to creating well-crafted products, frustrated by technical debt stemming from poor decisions, and we celebrate when something that required extensive effort finally launches and shows positive results.

• **Opportunities for growth and career advancement** At Leadtech, we prioritize your development. Enjoy a flexible career path with tailored internal training and an annual budget for external learning opportunities.

• **Comprehensive benefits package** Competitive salary, full-time permanent contract, and premium private health insurance (including dental and psychological services).

• 25 vacation days plus your birthday off, with flexible vacation options—no blackout dates!

• **Unique perks** You can work fully remotely in Spain or from our Barcelona office. If you choose to come to our Barcelona office, you'll find it equipped with complimentary coffee, fresh fruit, snacks, a game room, and a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking Mediterranean views.

• Additional benefits include restaurant tickets and nursery vouchers, deducted directly from your gross salary.

• Join us in an environment that fosters innovation, learning, and personal growth alongside passionate professionals. At Leadtech, you'll face exciting challenges and be part of a dynamic team committed to providing exceptional user experiences.
