Oncology Data Specialist I – Cancer Registry

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• This specialized role combines data science, information science, and quality assurance to interpret intricate medical information within electronic medical records, supporting essential program activities such as direct patient care, regulatory compliance, and accreditation standards.

• Conducts comprehensive reviews of medical data in the electronic medical record, including medical history, physical findings, screening details, and any previous cancer history; diagnostic findings such as types, dates, and results of procedures used to diagnose cancer; cancer identification regarding primary site, cell type, and disease extent; cancer treatments including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or immunotherapy; patient identification; and outcomes including annual follow-up information on patient status, recurrence, and treatment.

• Maintains an in-depth understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical/radiation techniques.

• Ensures compliance with data management protocols as outlined by state and national regulations, as well as Geisinger registry standards, to support the attainment of Geisinger’s strategic objectives.

• Identifies malignant cases and reportable benign or borderline disease cases as defined by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS) Manual, Pennsylvania Cancer Registry Manual, and Geisinger Cancer Committees for suspense file utilizing various search methodologies.

• Reviews and interprets clinical information in both electronic and hard copy medical records to extract and maintain data in line with operational standards as well as state and national reporting requirements.

• Abstracts data on primary and recurrence/metastasis sites including demographics, diagnosis, cancer history, comorbidities, stage and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and provider information following the current Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards manual.

• Inputs information directly into the computerized cancer registry.

• Conducts case-finding activities, including reviewing pathology reports, disease index, and suspense list in the computerized cancer registry.

• Codes the stage of disease using the TNM Classification of Malignant Tumors (TNM) staging system according to the appropriate American Joint Commission on Cancer Staging Manual.

• Maintains an accession file for all patients recorded in the cancer registry.

• Performs annual follow-ups for all living patients to ascertain current disease status in accordance with FORDS guidelines.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Cancer Registry Management Certificate from an NCRA accredited program and/or maintenance of ODS credential for the past 5 years while actively working in a hospital cancer registry is required.

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in tumor registry is required.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) is required.

• A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.

• Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification from the National Cancer Registry (NCRA) is required.
