This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Oversee the operations of the Office of the Ombudsman, which may hire or retain individuals deemed necessary for the effective performance of the Ombudsman's duties as outlined in Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law, including, but not limited to, independent legal counsel to assist the Ombudsman.
• Administer and manage the Office of the Ombudsman along with its overall business operations.
• Guide staff and provide direction and supervision regarding the conduct of business within the Office of the Ombudsman.
• Investigate complaints, mediate disputes, and dismiss complaints in alignment with Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law.
• Offer recommendations to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government or any Institution regarding potential resolutions for complaints.
• Maintain records of annual disclosure statements submitted by public officials and ensure Citizens have access to these disclosure statements per the Code of Ethics Act.
• Uphold confidentiality concerning all matters arising during the execution of duties under Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law.
• Provide the Citizens’ Council with an annual report on activities and operations for the preceding fiscal year, as specified in the Act.
• Ensure fairness, impartiality, and adherence to Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law in all duties performed.
• Review and modify any forms or documents required under Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law.
• Participate in budgeting for the Office of the Ombudsman.
• Carry out all responsibilities assigned under Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law or regulations.
• Must be a Citizen of the Métis Nation within Alberta;
• Possess an understanding of Métis cultural context and values;
• Exhibit integrity and professionalism;
• Have prior experience in dispute resolution;
• Must not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which they have not received a pardon or a record suspension that has not been revoked or is no longer in effect;
• Must not have caused a child to be deemed in need of intervention as defined by the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, RSA 2000, c C-12;
• Must not hold an elected office within the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule as necessary to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the Ombudsman Act.
• Willingness to travel throughout Alberta as required.
• Must possess reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• A criminal record check and an intervention record check will be required for the successful candidate.
