This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Produce short-form video content for The Mary Sue's TikTok to enhance reach, engagement, and follower count.
• Develop scripts inspired by existing articles, breaking news, trending topics, and original ideas.
• Propose timely video concepts related to entertainment, politics, internet culture, fandom, and geek culture.
• Identify articles that are ideal for TikTok and create platform-optimized videos.
• Conduct research, verify facts, and ensure adherence to editorial standards and ethical guidelines.
• Record on-camera segments and/or provide voice-over narration.
• Edit videos comprehensively, incorporating footage, captions, graphics, screenshots, clips, music, and various visual elements.
• Craft compelling hooks, maintain appropriate pacing, and utilize storytelling techniques to keep viewers engaged.
• Keep abreast of TikTok trends, popular sounds, formats, memes, and discussions.
• Implement TikTok SEO and best practices, including the use of keywords, captions, on-screen text, and hashtags.
• Experiment with innovative formats based on audience feedback and performance metrics.
• Collaborate with the managing editor to create multimedia and video-centric coverage.
• Establish a consistent TikTok voice and brand presence for The Mary Sue.
• Ensure a steady output of videos while swiftly responding to breaking news and dynamic internet discussions.
• Proven experience in creating short-form video content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or similar platforms.
• In-depth knowledge of TikTok, including effective hooks, pacing, viewer retention, engagement strategies, trends, and discoverability.
• Excellent writing and scripting abilities.
• Capability to produce clear, conversational, and captivating video scripts.
• Comfort with appearing on camera and/or recording voice-overs.
• Proficiency in video editing software such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or comparable tools.
• Strong news judgment with the ability to quickly identify valuable stories, trends, and conversations.
• Enthusiasm for and familiarity with breaking news, television and film, general entertainment, fandom, geek culture, and internet culture.
• Solid understanding of online communities and social media dialogues.
• Ability to work efficiently and autonomously in a fast-paced digital newsroom environment.
• Willingness to pitch ideas, accept editorial feedback, and adapt content based on viewer engagement.
• Comfort with remote work and maintaining high levels of communication.
• Experience in repurposing and distributing projects across various video and social media channels.
• Background in journalism, reporting, or digital media is a plus.
