This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise applications, microservices, and backend services utilizing Java and Spring Boot.
• Create data-access components using Spring Data, JPA/Hibernate, and JDBC.
• Develop both synchronous and asynchronous integrations between enterprise applications.
• Design and implement secure RESTful APIs adopting an API-first approach with OpenAPI.
• Implement API standards for versioning, error handling, authentication, authorization, pagination, and observability.
• Participate in reviews for API design and governance.
• Create event-driven integrations with JMS and Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, listeners, topics, queues, and event-processing components.
• Establish resilient messaging strategies with acknowledgment, retry, timeout, error-handling, and dead-letter queue/topic approaches.
• Work with Kafka topics, partitions, consumer groups, offsets, serialization, and schema management.
• Design and optimize relational database components, schemas, indexes, stored procedures, transactions, and SQL queries.
• Version database schema changes using Flyway or Liquibase.
• Develop automated unit, integration, API, database, messaging, and regression tests.
• Utilize automated and AI-assisted methods to generate test cases, test data, and test scenarios.
• Package applications using Docker and deploy, operate, and troubleshoot them on Kubernetes.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that integrate builds, tests, migrations, security scanning, container builds, and Kubernetes deployments.
• Create and sustain API/developer portals featuring interactive OpenAPI documentation, API catalogs, guides, examples, and onboarding workflows.
• Develop responsive, accessible web applications and portal interfaces using React and/or Angular with JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Troubleshoot issues related to applications, integrations, databases, messaging, and performance.
• Engage in peer code reviews and continuous improvement efforts.
• Collaborate with DevOps, platform engineering, UX, API, and backend teams.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• For CBP positions: must be able to obtain and maintain a CBP Public Trust background investigation.
• For Department of State positions: must hold an active Secret clearance.
• Approximately three to six (3–6) years of professional software development experience.
• Strong experience in Java programming and hands-on familiarity with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem.
• Proven experience in designing and developing REST APIs and microservices, with solid knowledge of OpenAPI/Swagger and API-first development.
• Experience with enterprise messaging technologies, including JMS and Apache Kafka.
• Strong SQL skills and relational database development experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or similar databases.
• Familiarity with JPA/Hibernate, Spring Data, and/or JDBC.
• Experience in writing automated unit, integration, API, database, and messaging tests using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, and REST Assured.
• Proficiency with Docker and containerized application development, along with a working knowledge of Kubernetes.
• Experience with automated CI/CD pipelines, Git, and contemporary source-control workflows.
• Experience in developing web applications using React and/or Angular, with working knowledge of JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
• Understanding of security principles related to applications, APIs, messaging, and databases.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Able to work remotely during East Coast hours and travel approximately once per quarter.
• Desired: Experience with Spring Kafka and Spring JMS.
• Desired: Experience with Kafka consumer groups, partitioning, schema management, retries, and dead-letter topics.
• Desired: Experience with JMS-compatible messaging platforms like IBM MQ, ActiveMQ, or Artemis.
• Desired: Experience with automated or AI-assisted test-case generation and tools like Arazzo or similar API testing tools.
• Desired: Experience with Flyway or Liquibase.
• Desired: Experience with API/developer portals such as Scalar, Redocly, Swagger UI, or Backstage.
• Desired: Experience with cloud services like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Desired: Experience deploying Spring Boot applications on Kubernetes, with familiarity with Helm.
• Desired: Understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and API authentication and authorization.
• Desired: Familiarity with API gateways, API management platforms, observability, DevSecOps, and automated security scanning.
• Remote work during East Coast hours.
• Travel approximately once per quarter.
