This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Lead a team of senior engineers managing the Docker Build Cloud and Hub's build systems while developing Docker's next generation of secure build infrastructure.
• Take ownership of delivery: transform a complex, high-stakes roadmap, which includes time-sensitive commitments to regulated and federal clients, into a clear and actionable plan for the team.
• Ensure the team's processes and methodologies are effective, collaborating closely with Product to convert strategy into a roadmap that inspires the team.
• Remain deeply involved in the technical aspects: engage in design discussions and code reviews, and participate actively in coding when beneficial, rather than overseeing from afar.
• Contribute significantly to defining the team's technical direction, collaborating with engineers leading various system components while allowing the entire team to make technical decisions.
• This position may involve participation in an on-call rotation to provide support beyond regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
• Be responsible for the reliability and operational excellence of the team's production services, ensuring a healthy and humane on-call rotation.
• Oversee the growth, development, and performance of every engineer on the team, hiring to enhance the team's capabilities.
• Collaborate across the broader organization - including Product, sales, commercial, legal, the Hub/registry team, and security - to align the team and protect it from disruptions.
• Maintain high standards for engineering excellence and improve the team's security practices.
• 5+ years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams, including leading engineers at or above their own level of technical expertise, with a proven ability to develop and retain senior individual contributors.
• 8+ years of professional, hands-on, full-time software engineering experience in backend, infrastructure, or platform engineering.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• A leader at heart: skilled in team processes and mechanics, adept at partnering with Product, and capable of understanding and navigating team dynamics to enhance collaboration.
• Comfortable taking over a team they didn't establish: gaining the trust of seasoned engineers and managing the complete spectrum of performance discussions, including challenging conversations, in a fair and direct manner.
• Technically proficient and still actively engaged: possessing recent engineering skills to participate in design and code reviews, contribute to technical direction, and write code when necessary. Not necessarily the top engineer or domain expert, but not a manager disconnected from technical details either.
• A strong interest in security: knowledgeable about how recent attacks have been executed, familiar with the OWASP Top 10, and the build threat model. Familiarity with software supply chain security (SLSA, in-toto, provenance, signing such as cosign, SBOMs, vulnerability scanning) is valued, but we prioritize security intuition and desire over a checklist of tools.
• Understanding of CI/CD and build-system internals, container images and image hardening, and OCI registry mechanics.
• Experience managing production infrastructure: on-call duties, incident response, SLOs, and the practicalities of maintaining high-traffic services.
• Comfortable leading a distributed, remote-first team across European and US time zones, with a high level of autonomy.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a commitment to staying connected with customers.
• Hands-on experience with Go is a plus, as it is the primary programming language of the team.
• Freedom & flexibility; adjust your work schedule to suit your lifestyle.
• Designated quarterly Whaleness Days plus an end-of-year Whaleness break.
• Home office setup; we want you to be comfortable while you work.
• 16 weeks of paid Parental leave (after 6 months of employment).
• Technology stipend equivalent to $100 USD net/month.
• PTO plan that encourages you to take time for activities you enjoy.
• Training stipend for conferences, courses, and classes.
• Equity; as a growing start-up, we want all employees to share in the company's success.
• Docker Swag.
• Medical benefits, retirement, and holiday policies vary by country.
• Remote-first culture, with offices located in Seattle and Paris.
