Manager, Energy & Utilities

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Act as the main liaison for all utility companies within EVCS’s network, fostering and sustaining productive, long-term relationships with key account managers, rate engineers, and regulatory affairs teams at utilities.

• Manage all communications with utilities, encompassing service applications, rate inquiries, interconnection requests, billing disputes, and program enrollments.

• Represent EVCS in utility working groups, rate case proceedings, and industry forums to safeguard and promote EVCS’s interests.

• Keep track of regulatory dockets and utility rate case filings for changes that could impact EVCS’s operational costs.

• Perform thorough tariff analyses across all EVCS utility accounts to pinpoint opportunities for transitioning to more advantageous rate structures, such as EV-specific rates, time of use (TOU) plans, and peak shaving strategies that minimize demand charges at each site.

• Create and sustain a comprehensive overview of EVCS’s energy expenses, monitoring cost per kWh, demand charges, and overall utility spending across the network.

• Identify, enroll, and manage participation in utility incentive programs, rebates, demand response initiatives, and make-ready projects.

• Collaborate with operations and site development teams on battery energy storage system (BESS) strategies, utilizing TOU and peak shaving insights to determine where storage investments will provide the most significant cost savings.

• Assess and pursue BESS revenue opportunities through utility and grid programs, including Demand Side Grid Services and Resource Adequacy programs, while identifying sites where BESS can facilitate building energy savings arrangements with site hosts.

• Attain a deep understanding of the billing systems, rate calculation methods, and tariff structures of each utility within the EVCS footprint.

• Review utility invoices to detect billing errors, misapplied rates, and overcharges, and lead the resolution process to recover funds.

• Maintain a current and precise database of all EVCS utility accounts, rate schedules, contract terms, and billing information.

• Develop reporting and dashboards that provide leadership with real-time insights into energy costs, anomalies, and optimization opportunities across the portfolio.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree

• Over 3 years of experience in energy management, utility operations, or a closely related field, ideally with direct experience working at or with regulated electric utilities.

• Extensive knowledge of commercial and industrial (C&I) utility rate structures, including demand charges, time of use rates, ratchet clauses, and power factor penalties.

• Proven ability to analyze complex tariff schedules and evaluate the financial implications of rate alternatives.

• Experience in managing utility relationships across multiple states and navigating the processes of various utility service territories.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a history of effectively advocating with utility companies on behalf of a commercial customer.

• Proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, SQL, or similar) to handle large billing datasets and create financial models.
