• Write engaging press releases, media advisories, op-ed drafts, and story memos that facilitate journalists' approval.

• Create and maintain a comprehensive media list covering national political, civic, and cultural sectors.

• Establish and nurture authentic, trust-based relationships with journalists, producers, editors, and bookers across print, digital, broadcast, and podcast platforms.

• Act as a consistent and reliable media contact, responding promptly, providing valuable background information, and positioning Builders as a go-to source for cross-partisan civic narratives.

• Identify and cultivate connections with emerging media voices and non-traditional platforms to extend Builders’ reach to new audiences.

• Assist in the placement and preparation of Builders’ spokespeople and Movement Partners for media appearances, interviews, and contributed content opportunities.

• Actively utilize AI tools throughout your workflow for pitch drafting, media research, coverage analysis, and contact list building, staying ahead of emerging PR technology trends.

• Manage the team’s media monitoring and outreach tools (Muck Rack, SmartSuite, TVEyes), maintaining lists, tracking coverage, and generating regular performance reports to refine strategies.

• Employ social listening and trend-monitoring tools to discover story opportunities early, keeping Builders ready to act swiftly when moments arise.

• Foster a mindset of continuous improvement regarding the communications tech toolkit by evaluating new tools, testing effective strategies, and providing recommendations to the Editorial Director.

• Contribute to messaging and communication strategies by offering insights on strategy and managing execution.

• Collaborate with the Editorial Director to ensure alignment of earned media initiatives with the broader editorial calendar, newsletter content, and organizational priorities.

• Work with programs, partnerships, and community teams to highlight stories, data, and voices that are worth pitching.

• Aid in crisis and rapid-response communications when necessary, assisting in drafting reactive statements and coordinating media inquiries under pressure.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5-7 years of experience in PR or communications, predominantly focused on earned media including pitching, placing, and managing press.

• A proven track record in pitching: you can reference successful placements you achieved in national or significant regional outlets and understand the factors that contributed to their success.

• Capability to build relationships with reporters covering political, civic, lifestyle, or national news.

• Strong and quick writing skills: you can produce a pitch, press release, or reactive statement that is polished, aligns with the brand, and is compelling with minimal editing.

• Extensive knowledge of the national political and media landscape; you are well-acquainted with the beats, outlets, and reporters focused on civic matters.

• Comfort in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities can change, and each day presents unique challenges.

• An instinct for identifying what is newsworthy; you consistently read the news and can quickly discern the angle that connects a story to Builders’ mission.

• An overall tech-savvy mindset – you actively seek tools that enhance efficiency and effectiveness, sharing that curiosity with the rest of the team, including fluency with the modern PR tech stack, such as media monitoring, outreach, AI tools, and measurement platforms.

• A collaborative spirit and genuine enthusiasm for Builders’ cross-partisan mission, recognizing that engaging both sides of the aisle is a strength rather than a limitation.

• Familiarity with the political and media landscape in Texas; knowledge of key outlets, reporters, and civic leaders is a significant advantage.

• Established relationships with creators, podcasters, or newsletter writers within the political, civic, or cultural arenas.

• Experience in communications within nonprofit, advocacy, or civic sectors.

• Understanding of op-ed placement and the development of thought leadership.

• Experience assisting executive spokespeople or public figures in media contexts.

• A flexible and remote-friendly work environment.
