This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.
• Recognize and provide guidance on legal matters in critical areas such as online content, product safety (including youth and AI), platform issues, privacy, intellectual property, and AI regulation.
• Forge robust relationships with key stakeholders, offering counsel on product development (including Generative AI offerings), go-to-market strategies, and risk mitigation, with an emphasis on safety concerns.
• Assist in the formulation and implementation of company-wide safety policies and procedures, including handling inquiries from regulatory bodies, government, and law enforcement, as well as developing scalable risk assessment frameworks and regulatory monitoring (focusing on online and child safety).
• Draft and uphold legal playbooks and internal guidance documents.
• Collaborate extensively with teams in policy, intellectual property, security, product, trust and safety regulatory, and engineering.
• Contribute to the establishment of scalable and effective legal review processes to facilitate the launch of new products.
• Engage in the assessment and coordination of potential safety, privacy, or data security incidents (including being on call), which encompasses investigations, notifications, and other resolution efforts.
• Stay informed about global AI, safety, and privacy regulations, as well as pertinent industry standards, perform impact assessments of emerging regulations, and lead compliance initiatives, including annual online safety risk evaluations.
• Address and assess incidents and escalations.
• Assist with Canva-wide privacy and legal training and awareness programs.
• Help redefine the role of in-house counsel by developing tools and processes that foster ongoing growth and success.
• Must be legally qualified (AU/NZ practising certificate).
• A minimum of 8 years practicing law, including some in-house experience.
• Knowledge of key online safety laws and regulations, along with privacy, platform, and consumer laws relevant to digital products and generative AI (e.g., Digital Services Act, Online Safety Act (UK and AU), GDPR).
• Profound understanding of contemporary AI technologies and products.
• Comfortable working collaboratively with team members across different time zones.
• A collaborative, pragmatic, and business-oriented lawyer eager to support the growth of the Canva group and participate in its exciting journey.
• Ability to clarify complex issues and streamline compliance while maintaining high standards.
• Enjoy working closely with engineers and product managers in fast-paced environments.
• Creative, curious, and driven by meaningful work.
• Experience handling data incidents and requests from governmental authorities.
• Bonus points for holding AIGP, CIPP/E, or similar qualifications (and a commitment to obtaining at least one certification within 6 months of joining is essential).
• Familiarity with Canva and its operations.
• High comfort level with technology and AI experimentation.
