Lead Relay Field Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.

📋 Description

• Calibrates, installs, maintains, and repairs protective relays and related equipment to guarantee the efficient, safe, and reliable functioning of the electric grid.

• Maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots intricate control systems, protective relay systems (both microprocessor and electro-mechanical); substation and electric utility protection systems; as well as station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

• Analyzes project-level scope of work and effectively organizes commissioning and resource scheduling while providing team leadership to complete test activities efficiently, punctually, and without service interruptions, all while adhering to established safety protocols.

• Interprets substation drawings (such as single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings).

• Writes procedures and/or test plans to support maintenance and construction efforts, which include the development of isolation plans and functional guidelines.

• Conducts testing that includes (but is not limited to): reading/verifying all voltage and current inputs to relays; confirming all metering (local and SCADA); calibrating all relays; performing trip tests (local and SCADA); verifying all alarms (local and SCADA); and checking all function switches, among others.

• Leads and performs routine troubleshooting and repair of substation relaying and control equipment.

• Commissions new substations, power equipment, relaying (electro-mechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor), pilot channel equipment (such as power line carrier, pilot wire, transfer, transfer trip, fiber optic, CVTs, line tuners, line traps, etc.), along with controls and communications equipment.

• Provides Project Technical Support to Field Service personnel.

• Offers technical mentorship to junior level field service personnel and is regarded as a subject matter expert in protective relaying within the field.

• Acts as a technical lead for small project teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing, and repairing substation relaying and control schemes.

• Experience is preferred in any of the following areas: substation design (including protection & control engineering), substation construction, substation commissioning, and SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing.

• Knowledge of 3-phase power systems; power system protection & control schemes; test equipment; and test equipment software.

• Proficiency in test equipment and tool/wiring usage; interpretation of wiring and elementary diagrams; basic test skills to execute the duties listed above; and basic PC skills.

• Ability to quickly learn and apply test procedures for various types of substation equipment and communicate effectively with diverse groups, adjusting communication for the audience and situation.

• Ability to learn and apply client’s switching procedures and safety measures as needed.

• Reference and complete assignments as outlined in applicable specifications.

• Capable of performing regular fieldwork both indoors and outdoors.

• Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, business acumen, and management ability.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

• Valid Driver’s license with a good driving record.

• Ability to communicate effectively in English (including reading and writing) due to the nature of safety-related materials, documentation, and client interactions.
