Lead Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of client engagements from start to finish: define the problem, create the solution, manage stakeholder expectations, and ensure successful delivery.

• Lead small project teams and act as the primary technical and strategic liaison for clients.

• Design, develop, and implement machine learning solutions across various domains and use cases, recognizing that each project is unique.

• Engage in the entire deployment process, working with managed cloud ML platforms (such as SageMaker, Vertex AI, Azure ML) and deploying containerized Python solutions on raw infrastructure.

• Mentor both junior and senior data scientists, contributing to the evolution of ML practices at OneSix.

• Assess new tools and methodologies, applying the most suitable ones to address client challenges.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of practical ML experience, with a proven record of deploying models into production.

• A background in consulting, professional services, or client-facing roles is highly preferred; you understand scope management, risk communication, and maintaining client confidence.

• Proficient in at least one specialization: predictive/classical ML, computer vision, or LLM/agentic systems, with the ability to adapt to related areas.

• Comfortable with the entire deployment stack, including managed cloud services and building from the ground up using Python, Docker, and EC2-style infrastructure. You produce clean production code rather than just notebook code.

• Proficient in Python and SQL; familiar with Git and frameworks such as PyTorch, Scikit-learn, or Hugging Face relevant to your specialty.

• Experience with experiment tracking and ML lifecycle management tools (MLflow, Weights & Biases, or similar).

• Holds an M.S. or Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline, or possesses equivalent expertise demonstrated through delivered projects.

• Strong communication skills to convey complex models clearly to non-technical executives and skeptical engineers alike.

• Must reside in the US or Canada.
