Lead Commissioning Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Conduct hands-on commissioning, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, and validation of BESS equipment, Energy Management Systems, power plant networks, Balance of Plant systems, and associated electrical infrastructure.

• Assist in site commissioning tasks, encompassing energization preparation, equipment inspections, functional testing, point-to-point checks, loop checks, communications assessments, and system integration testing.

• Adhere to safety protocols in line with Energy Vault policies, project HSEQ standards, electrical safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and local compliance requirements.

• Analyze electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, I/O lists, commissioning procedures, test plans, and vendor documentation.

• Support the execution of commissioning protocols and record test results, punch list items, defects, corrective measures, and completion documentation.

• Diagnose electrical, controls, communications, network, and equipment-related issues in partnership with commissioning engineers, SCADA engineers, network engineers, equipment suppliers, and site contractors.

• Assist in the commissioning of field devices, PCS/inverters, battery containers or racks, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, meters, relays, EMS/SCADA interfaces, and communication networks.

• Aid in verifying communication interfaces, which include fiber optic, serial, Ethernet, direct signal interfaces, and industrial network connections.

• Contribute to HMI/SCADA and EMS commissioning efforts, focusing on signal validation, alarms, controls, status indicators, metering, and operational displays.

• Manage daily field operations in coordination with site supervisors, EPC contractors, vendors, and internal project teams to ensure safe and efficient commissioning processes.

• Recognize technical challenges, address concerns promptly, and assist in troubleshooting field issues to uphold project timelines, quality, and safety standards.

• Offer practical field insights to commissioning engineers and project teams regarding installation quality, accessibility, constructability, safety, and operational readiness.

• Facilitate site handover, finalize documentation, complete as-built markups, address punch list items, and transition to operational or service teams.

• Provide informal mentorship to junior technicians, contractors, or field support personnel as needed, while primarily focusing on hands-on commissioning tasks.


⛳️ Requirements

• A valid A-grade electrician license is mandatory.

• Extensive hands-on experience in electrical commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, or field service within power generation, renewable energy, BESS, substations, utilities, industrial electrical systems, automation, or similar environments.

• Demonstrated experience with utility-scale or industrial electrical systems, including switchgear, transformers, inverters, meters, relays, protection systems, control panels, field instrumentation, and communications devices.

• Familiarity with Battery Energy Storage Systems, renewable energy projects, power plants, substations, or grid-connected energy infrastructure is highly desirable.

• Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and commissioning documentation.

• Practical understanding of electrical testing, commissioning protocols, fault detection, energization readiness, punch list management, and site safety practices.

• Experience with SCADA, EMS, HMI, controls, or automation systems is advantageous.

• Preferred experience troubleshooting communication interfaces such as fiber optic, serial, Ethernet, direct signal interfaces, and industrial networks.

• Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC DA/OPC UA, DNP3, IEC 61850, or IEC 60870-5-104 is advantageous.

• Familiarity with tools such as Visio, AutoCAD, testing equipment, commissioning software, SCADA/HMI tools, or field reporting systems is preferred.

• A bachelor’s degree, diploma, trade qualification, or technical certification in electrical, power systems, automation, instrumentation, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.

• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safe, high-quality field execution.

• Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and critical-thinking abilities.

• Capacity to work independently in the field while effectively coordinating with engineers, project managers, contractors, vendors, and site teams.

• Strong communication skills with the ability to document technical findings clearly.

• Willingness to travel up to 75% to support project commissioning, site testing, troubleshooting, and handover activities.
