Law Clerk Intern, Animal Protection Law

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Collaborate closely with attorneys in the Animal Protection Law section.

• Conduct research, prepare documentation, and prosecute animal protection lawsuits in both state and federal courts.

• Draft rulemaking petitions and comments for submission to administrative agencies.

• Review and prepare federal, state, and local legislation.

• Provide research and drafting assistance for legal groups focused on Farm Animals, Companion Animals, Wildlife & Animal Research, and Legislative Drafting & Review.

• Participate in weekly departmental reporting and planning meetings, along with other pertinent meetings.

• Assist in legal research, contract reviews, policy and compliance projects, litigation, risk management issues, and various legal operations initiatives.


⛳️ Requirements

• Candidates must be a 2L or 3L law student pursuing a Juris Doctor degree.

• Ability to learn and adhere to the guidelines and policies of Humane World for Animals and APL, following directions provided by staff.

• Submission of necessary paperwork and passing a background check is required prior to assignment.

• A strong interest in animal protection issues, litigation, and legal research is essential.

• Excellent oral communication skills, along with outstanding legal research, writing, and critical thinking abilities.

• Attention to detail and a dedication to accuracy are crucial.

• Capability to take initiative and manage multiple projects and priorities while showcasing a strong work ethic.

• Demonstrated flexibility and a willingness to learn, as well as taking initiative on various projects.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel) is required.

• Familiarity with Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis legal research databases is necessary.

• A strong understanding of the Internet and online research tools is important.

• Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality is essential.

• Professionalism in both attitude and appearance is expected.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively in a solution-oriented manner.

• Ability to work independently and utilize good judgment.

• Coursework or experience in animal protection, administrative, or environmental law is preferred.

• Candidates must meet one of the following criteria: currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university; a high school or accredited college or university graduate who completed their education within the past two years; or a service member with an honorable discharge within two years of military service.

• A commitment to at least 10 weeks of work, with a minimum of 35 hours per week, is required.
