ISP Network Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, configure, and maintain service provider networks across access, aggregation, and core layers.

• Engineer robust Layer 2 environments utilizing VLANs, LACP, MLAG, MC-LAG, Spanning Tree, and EVPN/VXLAN overlays.

• Troubleshoot control-plane and data-plane issues, such as BGP flaps, convergence delays, and CPU/memory anomalies.

• Design and manage redundant routing and switching environments using VRRP, HSRP, GLBP, and BFD.

• Serve as the escalation point for complex Layer 2/3 incidents and service-impacting challenges.

• Support IPv6 deployments, including dual-stack, NAT64, and 6PE.

• Manage secure remote connectivity with L2TP/IPsec, GRE, DMVPN, and L3 VPN solutions.

• Onboard new customers through network discovery, documentation, and transition to ongoing support.

• Lead network assessments, migrations, and upgrades for managed ISP customers.

• Develop and enforce standardized network design templates, configurations, and operational best practices.

• Configure and manage BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, VLANs, QoS, and IP addressing schemes.

• Provide support for Ciena and Nokia optical transport and fiber networks.

• Manage Calix and Adtran access network equipment, covering GPON, Active Ethernet, and ONT provisioning platforms.

• Conduct capacity planning and optimize network performance.

• Automate routine tasks with Python, Ansible, or Netmiko.

• Implement firmware lifecycle processes, manage change windows, rollback, and validation procedures.

• Coordinate with vendors for support, escalation, and solution planning.

• Monitor network performance, capacity, and fault events; respond to alerts and participate in root cause analysis.

• Collaborate with security teams to enforce network protection measures.

• Mentor junior engineers and assist in training technical support teams.

• Ensure high availability, scalability, and SLA compliance within customer networks.

• Maintain comprehensive documentation, diagrams, and change control logs.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• Required certification: CCNP/SP, JNCIP/SP, Nokia NRS II or equivalent.

• Advanced knowledge of BGP (eBGP/iBGP/MP-BGP), IS-IS, OSPF, MPLS, VRFs, VLANs, LAGs, VRRP/HSRP/GLBP, IPv4/IPv6, NAT, DHCP, RADIUS, and DNS.

• Strong BGP troubleshooting skills, including route filtering, redistribution, and convergence optimization.

• Proficient in network segmentation, micro-segmentation, and secure ISP infrastructure design.

• Experience with network monitoring and management systems such as SNMP, NetFlow, syslog, Kentik, NetBox, LibreNMS, and PRTG.

• Proficiency in fiber transport systems, WDM/DWDM technologies, and network planning tools.

• Understanding of ISP operations, provisioning, IP addressing, peering, and customer edge configurations.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic, customer-focused environment.

• Sufficient networking knowledge to mentor and guide junior engineers.

• Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to pass background screening as required by NRTC policies.

• Over 10 years of experience in service provider network engineering.

• Hands-on experience with Arista, Cisco, and Juniper platforms.

• Preferred: Cisco CCNP SPCOR or CCIE-SP; Calix Ethernet Access Network Fundamentals; Adtran AOE Administrator; Arista ACE-A; ITIL Foundation v4 or equivalent.

• Strong working knowledge of Nokia IP and optical transport platforms as well as Ciena platforms.

• Experience with Adtran TA5000, AOS, Calix E7/E9, and SMx/CMS provisioning tools.

• Familiarity with Python, Ansible, or similar scripting is an advantage.

• Experience with BNG, CGNAT, and IPv6 dual-stack and transition technologies.

• Understanding of NOC operations and managed services delivery models.

• Familiarity with RDOF/BEAD/FCC broadband initiatives and rural broadband deployments.

• Participation in an on-call rotation and after-hours support as required.
