This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.
• Conducts a thorough review of patients' complete current medical records, assigning the appropriate codes such as CPT, ICD, and MS-DRG for financial reimbursement and research in compliance with Federal Regulations and the policies of the Hospital and Department.
• Extracts essential data for the Quality Improvement (QI) department to address patient care issues and provide information to The Joint Commission.
• Utilizes various computer systems to investigate medical records as necessary to complete coding promptly.
• Takes charge of accounts receivable by searching for missing documents to ensure all encounters are coded, which includes generating relevant queries.
• Responsible for addressing any pre-bill edits, denials, and other issues for assigned accounts.
• Keeps abreast of current technical knowledge regarding legal and regulatory information from all relevant jurisdictions related to the business area.
• Engages in all departmental training sessions and updates to remain informed about the accepted coding guidelines and enhance personal medical knowledge and treatment practices.
• Must exhibit expertise in coding across multiple service areas and/or specialties.
• Maintains a minimum accuracy rate of 95%.
• Achieves average to high productivity levels in accordance with PHS Productivity Standards.
• Completes continuing education (CE) requirements as stipulated by PHS policy.
• A high school diploma or GED is mandatory.
• Must possess one of the following coding certifications at the time of hire: HCS-D, CCS, CCS-P, CPC-H, CPC, or RHIT/RHIA, with the expectation to obtain one of the coding credentials listed above within one year of employment.
• A minimum of one to three years of coding experience is required.
• Proficiency in computer skills is necessary, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with an encoder is preferred.
• Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records is advantageous.
• Must be capable of utilizing the internet and other electronic resources for research purposes.
