This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborate closely with attorneys in the Animal Protection Law section.
• Conduct research, prepare, and prosecute animal protection lawsuits in both state and federal courts.
• Draft rulemaking petitions and comments to be submitted to administrative agencies.
• Review and prepare federal, state, and local legislation.
• Offer research and drafting assistance for legal groups focusing on Farm Animals, Companion Animals, Wildlife & Animal Research, as well as Legislative Drafting & Review.
• Participate in weekly departmental reporting and planning meetings, along with other relevant discussions.
• Assist with contract reviews, policy and compliance projects, litigation matters, risk management issues, and various legal operations initiatives.
• Must be a 2L or 3L law student pursuing a Juris Doctor degree.
• Ability to learn and adhere to the guidelines and policies of Humane World for Animals and APL, and to follow staff directions.
• Required to submit necessary documentation and successfully pass a background check prior to assignment.
• Strong interest in animal protection issues, litigation, and legal research is essential.
• Excellent oral communication skills, along with outstanding legal research, writing, and critical thinking abilities.
• Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accuracy are crucial.
• Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities while exemplifying a strong work ethic.
• Must show flexibility and a willingness to learn, taking initiative on a variety of projects.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel), Westlaw, and Lexis/Nexis legal research databases, as well as a strong familiarity with online research tools.
• Must exercise discretion regarding confidential work.
• Professionalism in both attitude and appearance is required.
• Must possess problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively in a solution-oriented manner.
• Capability to work independently and exercise good judgment is essential.
• Coursework or experience in animal protection, administrative, or environmental law is preferred.
• Must meet one of the following criteria: currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university; graduated from high school or an accredited college or university within the last two years; or received an honorable military discharge within two years of leaving the military.
• Must be available to work a minimum of 35 hours per week and commit to at least 10 weeks.
