This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Take charge of integrations and software support for Nabu Casa products within the Home Assistant, ESPHome, and associated Open Home Foundation ecosystems throughout the entire product lifecycle.
• Develop and sustain Python integrations, proxy libraries, and software components that link Nabu Casa products to the Home Assistant and ESPHome ecosystems, with a primary focus on expanding these components initially.
• Create and maintain Python software that interacts with device protocols and hardware peripherals, translating low-level behavior into clean Home Assistant entities and user experiences.
• Work closely with the Embedded Linux OS Engineer and Hardware team to grasp hardware capabilities and translate them into well-organized software integrations.
• Contribute to Home Assistant core, ESPHome, and other related projects as necessary to support integrations, configuration flows, entity models, and platform functionalities.
• Ensure code quality in your areas by writing well-documented, maintainable, and thoroughly tested Python code.
• Review community pull requests and issues related to your integrations, offering clear and constructive feedback to facilitate progress in contributions.
• Investigate and resolve software and integration issues, including protocol edge cases, compatibility challenges, regression bugs, and device communication failures.
• Maintain robust unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop test coverage where applicable.
• Proficient in Python development, including async/await, testing frameworks, type annotations, and scalable software architecture patterns.
• Required: significant experience in contributing to large open-source projects, including public pull requests, code review, and collaborative workflows.
• Experience in building integrations, APIs, automation systems, device communication layers, or software for connected devices.
• Comfortable operating across software and hardware boundaries, with an understanding of device protocols and hardware interaction concepts (deep hardware expertise is not necessary — that will be handled by other team members).
• Familiar with local device and communication protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, USB, UART, mDNS, SPI, I2C, MQTT, or similar technologies.
• Ability to quickly grasp unfamiliar systems and navigate large, complex codebases, along with a talent for discovery: figuring out how complex systems integrate and developing new solutions for greenfield challenges.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities across integrations and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with Home Assistant, ESPHome, integrations, configuration flows, entity models, or other related Open Home ecosystem projects is a significant advantage.
• Five weeks (twenty-five days) of paid time off.
• Fourteen days of paid sick leave if your country/laws classify them as unpaid.
• Six weeks of paid and an additional six weeks of unpaid parental leave to be utilized within the first year after birth.
• A budget for your work hardware once you commence employment; after three years, you may retain this equipment for personal use.
• An annual smart home budget to ensure you remain updated with the latest smart home offerings.
• An annual education budget to assist you in your professional growth and skill enhancement.
• A yearly performance bonus tied to company performance.
• A 50% contribution to your internet connection fee at your home workspace.
• One day every two weeks to focus on your personal projects.
• If you are currently engaged in Home Assistant-related side projects, you can allocate work time to maintain them.
