This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.
• Take charge of integrations and software support for Nabu Casa products within the Home Assistant, ESPHome, and related Open Home Foundation ecosystems throughout the entire product lifecycle.
• Develop and sustain Python integrations, proxy libraries, and software components that link Nabu Casa products to the Home Assistant and ESPHome ecosystems — initially focusing on expanding these components.
• Create and manage Python software that interacts with device protocols and hardware peripherals, converting low-level functionalities into organized Home Assistant entities and user experiences.
• Work closely with the Embedded Linux OS Engineer and Hardware team to comprehend hardware capabilities and translate them into well-designed software integrations.
• Contribute to the Home Assistant core, ESPHome, and related projects as necessary to support integrations, configuration flows, entity models, and platform functionalities.
• Ensure code quality in your areas by writing well-tested, maintainable, and well-documented Python code.
• Review community pull requests and issues related to your integrations, providing clear and constructive feedback to facilitate contributions.
• Investigate and resolve software and integration issues, including protocol edge cases, compatibility challenges, regression bugs, and device communication failures.
• Maintain robust unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop test coverage wherever applicable.
• Proficient in Python development, encompassing async/await, testing frameworks, type annotations, and scalable software architecture patterns.
• Required: significant experience contributing to large open-source projects, including public pull requests, code review, and asynchronous collaboration workflows. This experience is crucial as the role involves working within expansive shared codebases and public contribution processes.
• Experience in building integrations, APIs, automation systems, device communication layers, or software for connected devices.
• Comfortable navigating software and hardware boundaries, with an understanding of device protocols and hardware interaction concepts (deep hardware expertise is not necessary — that is managed by other team members).
• Knowledge of local device and communication protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, USB, UART, mDNS, SPI, I2C, MQTT, or similar technologies.
• Ability to rapidly grasp unfamiliar systems and navigate extensive, complex codebases — along with a talent for discovery: figuring out how intricate systems interconnect and creating new solutions for greenfield challenges.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting aptitude across integrations and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with Home Assistant, ESPHome, integrations, configuration flows, entity models, or related Open Home ecosystem projects is a significant advantage.
• Five weeks (twenty-five days) of paid time off.
• Fourteen days of paid sick leave if your country/laws classify them as unpaid.
• Six weeks of paid and six weeks of unpaid parental leave to be utilized in the first year following birth.
• A budget for your work hardware once you commence. After three years, you may retain this equipment for personal use.
• An annual smart home budget to ensure you stay updated with the latest offerings in smart home technology.
• An annual education budget to assist you in growing and remaining at the top of your game.
• A yearly performance bonus based on company performance.
• A 50% contribution towards your internet connection fee at your home workspace.
• One day every two weeks dedicated to working on your personal projects.
• If you are currently involved in Home Assistant-related side projects, you may allocate work time to maintain them.
