This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Evaluate legal and factual matters, performing thorough and well-reasoned legal research.
• Develop and present defense strategies independently on behalf of clients.
• Draft pleadings, depositions, panel requests, and briefs to support defense strategies autonomously.
• Collaborate with our Claims Partners to secure optimal outcomes for our Hartford insured.
• Deliver effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and additional services to clients regarding legal and factual matters within the representation scope.
• Engage with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
• Ensure the prompt, efficient, and effective resolution of assigned cases.
• Manage a diverse case inventory encompassing full defense and lien files.
• Negotiate and settle cases/lien on behalf of The Hartford.
• Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence during trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolutions.
• Interpret and analyze medical reports or bills/invoices, providing disability ratings and/or applicable Official Medical Fee Schedules based on jurisdiction.
• Offer recommendations and case analysis to business partners and clients regarding suitable file handling strategies.
• Integrate legal support staff effectively into the case handling process when appropriate.
• Uphold all standards of excellence in file management.
• Meet annual billable hour expectations.
• Participate in continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree or law degree preferred.
• Legal Studies degree preferred.
• Strong comprehension of California Workers’ Compensation law and litigation procedures.
• Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, particularly in Workers’ Compensation case handling preferred.
• Proficient persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
• Strong evaluation and negotiation abilities.
• Trial experience is preferred.
• Positive-minded and collaborative team player attitude.
• Excellent legal research and writing skills.
• Solid proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
• Experience with Lexis Nexis is a plus!
• Self-motivated with outstanding organizational and prioritization skills.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to quickly adapt to new software as necessary.
