Head of AI/ML – VC Backed Startups

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Define and implement the AI and machine learning strategy of the company, ensuring alignment with product and business priorities.

• Build, lead, and nurture teams in the areas of machine learning, applied AI, data science, and research.

• Identify high-impact AI opportunities and transform them into unique product features.

• Oversee the development, evaluation, deployment, and continuous enhancement of production ML systems.

• Set technical standards for model quality, experimentation, reliability, observability, and responsible AI practices.

• Guide decisions on model selection, fine-tuning, retrieval, data strategy, infrastructure, and whether to build or buy solutions.

• Collaborate with engineering and product leaders to incorporate AI into scalable customer-facing products.

• Manage data collection, labeling, governance, and feedback mechanisms.

• Assess emerging models, research, and tools for their value to customers and the business.

• Communicate the AI strategy, capabilities, limitations, and investment priorities to executives, boards, customers, and partners.

• Assist in recruiting, organizational design, and workforce planning for AI and ML functions.

• Implement safeguards for privacy, security, bias, explainability, and regulatory compliance.

• Submit an application to become part of SignalFire’s Talent Ecosystem.

• Participate in ongoing application review and potential alignment with SignalFire portfolio companies.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, or software engineering, including notable leadership roles.

• Demonstrated experience in building and scaling AI/ML teams within startup or fast-growing technology environments.

• Proven track record in developing and deploying machine learning systems in production settings.

• Strong technical expertise in modern ML methodologies, model evaluation, data pipelines, and production infrastructure.

• Experience utilizing large language models, generative AI, deep learning, or traditional machine learning in real-world applications.

• Capability to connect technical investments to product differentiation, customer outcomes, and business value.

• Experience collaborating with product, engineering, data, and go-to-market leaders.

• Sound judgment regarding model quality, latency, cost, scalability, safety, and reliability.

• Ability to navigate between hands-on technical leadership, team management, and executive-level strategy.

• An advanced degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
