This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.
• The Grant Accountant will report directly to the Grants Finance Manager (or their designee) and will be responsible for providing financial, accounting, and grant support services to fulfill the needs of the organization and its funding partners.
• Timely preparation and submission of grant invoices and billings to funders, including the necessary forms (e.g., SF-270) and compilation of required supporting documentation.
• Responsible for generating accurate and timely financial reports on grants to be submitted to funders, which includes the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports utilizing SF-425 or other relevant templates.
• Prepare internal financial reports regarding grants for management, relaying monthly financial results to program staff to inform them of each project's financial status and current award balance.
• Analyze grant agreements, terms, and conditions to ensure that expenditures comply with funding guidelines and allowable expense requirements; stay updated on U.S. Government (USG) grant management policies and their relevance.
• Participate in award kick-off meetings; ensure that all award-related documents are properly saved, updated in the accounting system, and accurately reflected in the grants tracking log with complete reporting information.
• Collaborate with senior finance colleagues to handle journal entries, labor distribution changes, reconciliations, and grant closeout activities; track and monitor match (cost-share) fund requirements and progress on a monthly basis.
• Work closely with program divisions, budget managers, and the finance team to ensure the proper and timely use of grant funds in accordance with applicable guidelines and budget deadlines.
• Compile year-end reports and supporting work papers for the annual audit and any grant-specific audits; manage grant-related accounting issues with prompt resolution and appropriate escalation to the Grants Finance Manager.
• Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience in grant accounting within the nonprofit sector, government agencies, or similar environments, with an understanding of federal and non-federal grant reporting requirements and regulations.
• Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work with complex formulas, pivot tables, and financial modeling.
• Strong customer service orientation alongside excellent verbal, written, analytical, and organizational skills.
• High standards of ethics, integrity, transparency, and trustworthiness; maintains confidentiality and honors commitments.
• Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks with a keen attention to detail; results-oriented and capable of maintaining productivity with minimal supervision.
• Experience handling large federal awards, with familiarity with USDA regulations, USDA General Terms and Conditions (GT&C), and NRCS Grant Agreement and Development Budget Expense Tables (GADBET) (preferred).
• Familiarity with the Sage Intacct accounting system (preferred).
• Demonstrated dedication to the mission of AFT.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
• A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in grant accounting or financial management, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
• CPA and/or MBA is an advantage.
