This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• The intern will engage in legal and policy research and writing projects focused on criminal justice.
• Support our team members by researching and analyzing legislation, elected officials, and pertinent developments in the political and advocacy arenas at both the state and federal levels.
• Assist in the preparation of advocacy and public education materials, correspondence, and reports as required.
• Help identify opportunities to promote civil liberties and civil rights in intricate policy areas through various methods at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Conduct legal and policy research, and evaluate state and federal legislation, advocacy initiatives, and related legal and policy matters.
• Monitor legal and legislative changes across states, and assist in pinpointing opportunities to advance civil liberties and civil rights.
• Prepare advocacy and public education documents, including model policies and toolkits for ACLU affiliates, partners, and others; draft memoranda and other correspondence.
• Assist in coordinating briefings for government officials and in preparing and drafting testimony on pending legislation.
• Help manage projects and coordinate strategies to achieve campaign goals or other policy/political outcomes across ACLU departments, ACLU affiliates, and coalition partners.
• Currently enrolled as a law or graduate student.
• Proven commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, ending mass incarceration, and confronting racism within the criminal legal system.
• Exceptional research, writing, and verbal communication abilities.
• Demonstrated capacity to conduct thorough research, analysis, and fact-finding.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a verified ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
• Self-driven with the capability to take initiative, manage multiple tasks, and see projects to completion.
• A stipend is offered for students who are legally authorized to work.
• Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.
• Below are the stipend rates:
• $24/hr for graduate and law students or those with equivalent experience.
