This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Oversee the global tax strategy for the organization across its international structure and operations.
• Act as the primary tax advisor to executive leadership on key tax and strategic issues.
• Manage complex international and cross-border tax planning while creating tax-efficient corporate frameworks.
• Provide guidance on foreign affiliates, surplus planning, repatriation, cross-border distributions, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, central management and control, and other international considerations.
• Own and implement the transfer pricing strategy, including policies, methodologies, intercompany agreements, documentation, and execution.
• Direct the tax analysis of intercompany financing, service agreements, intellectual property arrangements, distributions, and other international financial transactions.
• Develop and enhance tax governance, internal controls, documentation standards, and tax risk management procedures.
• Ensure compliance with direct and indirect tax reporting across relevant jurisdictions.
• Spot tax planning opportunities, structural enhancements, and significant tax risks during expansion phases.
• Lead tax audits, disputes, controversies, and liaise with tax authorities.
• Manage and coordinate external accounting firms, tax advisors, legal counsel, and other specialists.
• Work closely with finance, legal, accounting, and executive leadership to incorporate tax considerations into major decisions, offering practical advice.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in Canadian and international tax, including significant tenure with a Big Four or other reputable accounting firm.
• Senior leadership experience in international tax, typically at the Senior Director level or above in a leading accounting firm, or equivalent role within a complex multinational organization.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage highly complex international tax issues and lead tax strategy initiatives.
• Extensive knowledge of Canadian international tax and its application to intricate multinational structures.
• Significant experience with foreign affiliates, surplus planning, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, and cross-border tax issues.
• Strong background in multinational structures, international tax planning, intercompany arrangements, financing, distributions, and international financial transactions.
• Comprehensive understanding of transfer pricing strategy, policies, documentation, and implementation.
• Solid knowledge of tax governance, tax risk management, and oversight of international tax compliance.
• Substantial experience in advising CFOs, founders, senior executives, boards, business owners, or other high-level decision-makers on critical tax issues.
• Experience in directing and scrutinizing external tax advisors, accounting firms, legal counsel, and other specialists.
• Strong commercial acumen with the capability to balance tax efficiency, technical defensibility, compliance, operational feasibility, and business goals.
• Ability to work independently with sound judgment and accountability.
• Excellent analytical, written, communication, and negotiation capabilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law, or a related field.
• CPA designation is strongly preferred; equivalent senior professional tax qualifications may also be considered.
• Advanced Canadian tax education or professional training is highly preferred.
• Experience with complex multinational structures involving Hong Kong or other major international jurisdictions is particularly relevant.
• Previous in-house experience within a complex multinational group is beneficial, though not mandatory.
• Experience with high-growth and highly international businesses is especially relevant.
• Familiarity with technology, SaaS, software, digital businesses, or organizations driven by intellectual property is particularly pertinent.
