Engineering Manager, Search Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Oversee the delivery and technical excellence in areas such as query serving, indexing, availability, and APIs.

• Establish the technical vision for the search stack, including both architecture and ranking strategies.

• Take ownership of the index's freshness and accuracy, as well as the availability domain.

• Evaluate designs, question assumptions, and assist in mitigating architectural risks.

• Foster a culture that emphasizes measurement, experimentation, and ongoing improvement.

• Mentor, develop, and enhance the skills of engineers through direct feedback.

• Prioritize effectively and sequence tasks to enhance execution.

• Collaborate closely with product teams, data specialists, AI/ML experts, and platform engineering.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering.

• Proven experience in leading teams or acting as a technical lead.

• Engineering management background, demonstrated by hiring and developing engineering talent.

• Strong technical expertise in search or retrieval systems such as Vespa, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr.

• In-depth knowledge of backend systems, particularly in distributed, event-driven architectures; proficiency in Go is preferred.

• Familiarity with indexing pipelines, document models, and event-streaming patterns.

• Keen understanding of relevance and ranking, with the ability to translate product objectives into technical actions.

• Experience in observability, production operations, and safe deployment practices.
