This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Enhance the productivity of engineers on a daily basis. Consistently refine the systems, workflows, and tools that facilitate software development across Chainguard.
• Develop opinionated, self-service platform capabilities that empower engineering teams to concentrate on addressing customer challenges instead of managing infrastructure.
• Take ownership of and refine our software delivery systems, ensuring that builds, testing, releases, and deployments are swift, reliable, secure, and scalable.
• Promote operational excellence through service level objectives (SLOs), observability, automation, capacity planning, and ongoing enhancement.
• Lead a highly skilled team of senior and principal engineers. Eliminate barriers, provide clarity, and cultivate an environment where engineers can deliver outstanding work.
• Manage without micromanaging—establish goals and create conditions that allow the team to execute efficiently. Trust the follow-through after asking once.
• Advance initiatives in Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and platform automation that enhance consistency and alleviate operational burdens.
• Assist in defining and implementing the roadmap for the Internal Developer Platform while balancing immediate needs with long-term investments.
• Collaborate closely with application teams, security teams, and engineering leadership to comprehend developer needs and prioritize platform investments.
• 2–3+ years of engineering management experience for Manager level; 5–10+ years for Senior Manager level.
• Demonstrated experience managing highly skilled and senior engineers, including principal-level talent.
• Comfortable with the compensation dynamics involved in managing senior individual contributors.
• Excellent coaching, communication, and organizational skills.
• Technically proficient enough to read and occasionally contribute to code—this role is not solely focused on people management. Chainguard managers are expected to remain technically engaged.
• Background in platform engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), DevOps, or infrastructure; having this foundational expertise will enable effective leadership of this team.
• Understanding and appreciation of the open-source and security landscape.
• Experience in building and operating Internal Developer Platforms, golden path tooling, or similar engineering productivity systems.
• Familiarity with incident management, SLOs, observability, capacity planning, and operational excellence.
• Strong knowledge of Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure.
• Familiarity with infrastructure automation and GitOps workflows.
• Extensive experience with GitHub and/or GitLab administration, workflows, and CI/CD systems.
• Flexible & Remote-First Culture: Work remotely with opportunities for team meetups, bi-annual destination summits, and a monthly stipend for coworking spaces, phone, and internet expenses.
• Our Approach to Equity: Receive stock options upon hire and promotion. Additionally, you can participate in secondary offerings and have 10 years to exercise your options (yes, you read that right: 10 years!).
• 100% Covered Health Insurance: We fully cover your health, vision, and dental insurance premiums for you and your dependents. Nothing is deducted from your paycheck.
• ∞ Flexible Time Off: Take the time you need—doing our best work requires us to recharge and reset.
• 18 Weeks Paid Parental Leave: We provide 18 weeks for birthing parents and 12 weeks for non-birthing parents, with the option to take it all at once or spread it throughout your child's first year.
