This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Lead, mentor, and expand a distributed team of approximately 10 engineers located in the US, Mexico, and India.
• Create a cohesive team comprising full-time employees and contractors with unified standards and quality benchmarks.
• Develop overlap windows, handoff processes, and asynchronous documentation to accommodate different time zones.
• Recruit, onboard, and nurture engineers while collaborating with HR and vendors on staffing efforts.
• Regularly write production-level code and engage in sprint stories alongside engineers.
• Collaborate with engineers, review pull requests, and spearhead technical design within the codebase.
• Prototype challenging aspects of the headless migration.
• Oversee the transition from Salesforce Commerce Cloud storefronts to a headless Next.js frontend deployed on Vercel.
• Sequence migration increments while ensuring business operations remain uninterrupted.
• Safeguard SEO, URL structures, performance metrics, Core Web Vitals, analytics integrity, and checkout dependability.
• Collaborate on integration strategies between Next.js, SFCC APIs, and third-party services.
• Drive AI adoption across all stages including requirements gathering, design, coding, review, testing, documentation, and release.
• Set boundaries and establish practices for AI coding assistants and agents.
• Work with QA on AI-assisted test generation, regression coverage, and quality automation initiatives.
• Evaluate AI's impact on cycle time, quality, and throughput.
• Oversee engineering delivery for three brand storefronts.
• Ensure uptime, performance, and incident response, particularly before peak seasons.
• Establish observability, alerting, and on-call protocols.
• Maintain quality through automated testing, CI/CD, code reviews, and release methodologies.
• Manage technical debt and effectively communicate its business significance.
• Collaborate with engineering, QA, product, merchandising, marketing, and brand leaders.
• Translate business objectives into an engineering roadmap and align work with measurable business results.
• Oversee vendor and contractor relationships and ensure effective knowledge transfer.
• 7+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Minimum of 3 years in a player-coach or engineering manager position directly leading engineers.
• Currently engaged in hands-on coding; must demonstrate production code writing in a technical interview.
• Practical experience with Salesforce Commerce Cloud (B2C Commerce), including storefront development, cartridges, and platform APIs.
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and server-rendered web applications.
• Proven experience utilizing AI tools and agents throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Ability to connect engineering efforts to business value and articulate it in actionable terms.
• Experience managing distributed teams across various countries and time zones.
• Experience leading mixed teams of full-time employees and contractors while holding vendor partners accountable.
• Experience operating production eCommerce platforms at scale, including readiness for peak seasons and incident management.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
• Highly preferred: production experience with headless or composable commerce architecture.
• Highly preferred: hands-on experience with Next.js and Vercel, including SSR, ISR, edge rendering, and caching strategies.
• Highly preferred: experience in leading a storefront replatforming or migration to headless architecture.
• Preferred: familiarity with SCAPI, OCAPI, SLAS, and SFCC Business Manager.
• Preferred: experience managing multi-brand or multi-site commerce on a shared platform.
• Preferred: background in retail, outdoor, marine, RV, or specialty retail sectors.
• Preferred: working knowledge of SEO, accessibility (WCAG), and Core Web Vitals in commerce.
• Preferred: familiarity with Vercel, Harness or similar CI/CD tools, Dynatrace or comparable observability solutions, Kong or similar API gateways, Linear, and Confluence.
