Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Your primary objective will be to assemble and guide an engineering team that excels in a dynamic, AI-driven environment—mentoring engineers, providing clarity, and achieving significant results with robust technical judgment.

• You will oversee teams focused on AI agents and agentic workflows within n8n, empowering users to manage intricate, multi-step automation across various tools, data, and models.

• Cultivate a high-performing, empowered AI agent and evaluation team.

• Lead, mentor, and nurture a team of engineers dedicated to developing agent-based systems, workflow orchestration capabilities, and AI-enhanced nodes.

• Promote a culture of experimentation and swift iteration, where engineers continuously refine prompts, tool utilization, and workflow logic based on real-world results.

• Assist your team in adopting a systems-thinking approach rather than focusing solely on features—designing dependable agentic workflows instead of isolated AI calls.

• Aid in recruitment and team structuring with an emphasis on AI engineering, distributed systems thinking, and product-oriented developers.

• Provide clarity in a rapidly evolving agentic landscape.

• Assist your team in navigating a domain where agents, tools, memory, and orchestration patterns are still developing and swiftly changing.

• Convert advancing AI capabilities into clear product and engineering directives for n8n workflows, nodes, and automation elements.

• Direct decisions regarding agent architecture (e.g., single-agent vs. multi-agent workflows, tool selection, memory strategies, human-in-the-loop design).

• Cut through the noise and uncertainty to concentrate on what genuinely delivers reliable value to users crafting automations.

• Propel the execution of agentic workflows at scale.

• Collaborate with Product and Design to define and launch agent-powered workflow experiences that are intuitive, composable, and powerful.

• Ensure the team delivers comprehensive agent systems, including orchestration logic, tool integrations, memory management, and execution environments.

• Establish best practices for workflow reliability, including retries, fallbacks, guardrails, and observability of agent behavior.

• Balance the need for speed and iteration with the requirements for determinism, debuggability, and user trust in automated systems.

• Enhance the processes by which users build, test, and debug AI-powered workflows within n8n.

• Lead with technical authority in agent systems.

• Bring substantial technical expertise in LLM integrations, tool usage, and workflow orchestration, allowing you to mentor and challenge your team effectively.

• Support architectural decisions regarding agent frameworks, execution engines, state management, and integration layers.

• Assist the team in designing systems that manage long-running workflows, external APIs, and dynamic decision-making by agents.

• Engage in technical details when necessary (e.g., prompt design, tool schemas, workflow execution challenges) to support your team.

• Advocate for best practices related to safety, guardrails, and predictable behavior in agent-driven systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in first-line engineering management: You have led teams that deliver impactful product outcomes, ideally encompassing automation platforms, workflow systems, or AI-powered features.

• Extensive experience with evaluations and driving results through evaluations.

• Strong leadership skills: You effectively mentor engineers and build teams that excel in ambiguous, fast-evolving technical environments.

• Comfort with ambiguity and rapid change: You provide clarity in a landscape where agent patterns, tools, and best practices are still being established.

• Strong foundation in software engineering: You can confidently engage in discussions surrounding distributed systems, APIs, and system design.

• Hands-on when needed: You can delve into workflow logic, integrations, or AI system behavior to assist your team.

• Cross-functional collaboration: Experience working closely with Product and Design to deliver user-facing builder experiences.

• Experience in high-growth SaaS environments: You understand how to scale teams and systems in a fast-paced setting.

• Familiarity with AI/agents: Experience working with LLMs, agents, or automation systems, along with an understanding of their strengths, limitations, and potential failure modes.
