Engineer-in-Training II – Substation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Execute and oversee the design of electrical substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV, which encompasses layouts and service systems.

• Lead the development and evaluation of one-line and phasing diagrams, substation layouts, grounding/grid designs, and conduit and cable routing plans.

• Conduct and verify studies related to grounding, lightning protection, switchyard illumination, and both rigid and flexible bus systems.

• Take ownership of assigned design packages, ensuring they meet quality standards, completeness, and project specifications.

• Prepare and assess design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and drawing inventories.

• Review vendor drawings and technical submissions to ensure they comply with project specifications and design intentions.

• Provide engineering assistance during construction, including addressing RFIs, issuing technical clarifications, and engaging in field reviews.

• Participate in meetings with clients, design assessments, and constructability evaluations.

• Collaborate with civil/structural, protection & control, and telecommunications teams.

• Manage project tasks within defined scope, timelines, and budget constraints.

• Mentor and guide junior EITs and designers.

• Maintain project documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement efforts.

• Incorporate relevant safety standards, codes, and best practices into designs.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.

• Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for/working towards the P.Eng. designation with EGBC.

• 2–5 years of pertinent experience in transmission & distribution or substation design.

• Proven experience in substation design, including layouts, grounding, and bus design; experience with BC Hydro or utility projects is advantageous.

• Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards, such as the Canadian Electrical Code, IEEE, IEC, CSA, and OH&S.

• Proficient in AutoCAD, CYMCAP, CDEGS, WINIGS, ETAP, or similar engineering software.

• Experience in applying engineering tools in project environments.

• Strong problem-solving abilities with a knack for developing practical and technically sound solutions.

• Capability to work independently and manage various tasks in a deadline-focused setting.

• Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to effectively engage with internal teams, clients, and vendors.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
