Director, Product Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Lead and nurture a team of product designers across various product pods, including direct responsibility for hiring, performance management, and career advancement.

• Collaborate with the VP of Design on design strategy, organizational structure, and the progressive scaling of the design function.

• Foster an environment that enables designers to excel: align stakeholders, oversee cross-functional dependencies, and clarify ambiguous projects.

• Establish and maintain high standards for design across the platform — including interaction patterns, visual execution, design system standards, and long-term product quality — ensuring consistency as the team and product areas expand.

• Define the operational framework for product design at Givebutter, outlining how the team integrates AI tools and designs for AI-powered product experiences.

• Serve as a strategic design partner to senior leaders in Product and Engineering, guiding cross-functional decisions and aligning teams around common goals.

• Influence product strategy through a deep understanding of our users (fundraisers and donors), transforming ambiguous cross-product challenges into clear directives for the team.

• Make critical design decisions that balance craftsmanship, speed, and business impact, adopting a company-wide ownership mentality.

• Evolve Givebutter's design culture as the team grows, establishing practices, norms, and rituals that can scale effectively.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in product design, including 3–5 years in a managerial role overseeing other designers.

• A robust portfolio showcasing design leadership across complex, multi-surface product environments, demonstrating clear impact on user experience and business results.

• Proven track record in developing designers at various career stages and intentionally cultivating team culture.

• Strong design sensibility. You can articulate what "great" looks like in interaction design, visual design, and design systems, and uphold that standard across the team.

• Experience working closely with Product and Engineering leadership as a strategic partner, influencing product roadmaps and direction through design insights.

• Exceptional judgment in prioritization. You know when to dive deep, when to delegate, and how to direct a team towards the most impactful work.

• Outstanding communication skills. You can present a clear narrative to an executive audience while providing actionable feedback to junior designers on the same day.

• Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-growth, and ambiguous environment where priorities shift and speed is essential.

• Genuine understanding of how AI is transforming design, both in crafting AI-driven experiences and in the daily work of designers.

• Required experience in SaaS or B2B products; experience in nonprofit or social impact sectors is a plus. Strong preference for candidates with a background in designing AI-native, automation, or agentic product experiences.
