Director, Payments and Risk Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of and enhance Buildertrend's comprehensive payments risk and operations strategy, which includes merchant onboarding, underwriting, transaction monitoring, dispute resolution, servicing, and portfolio management.

• Develop and enhance fraud prevention and loss mitigation capabilities by establishing scalable processes, continuous feedback mechanisms, and AI-driven solutions that enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.

• Assess, implement, and refine AI-enabled fraud and risk platforms to scale operations through automation while ensuring a premium customer experience.

• Lead and cultivate a high-performing payments risk and operations team, establishing the necessary structure, processes, and capabilities to support sustainable growth.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to integrate risk controls into payment experiences, onboarding processes, payout configurations, APIs, and risk management tools, acting as the principal risk leader throughout product development.

• Create risk analytics and reporting systems that deliver real-time operational insights and visibility at the portfolio level, empowering leaders to make informed business and financial decisions.

• Work closely with Compliance, Product Security, Engineering, Finance, Revenue, the General Manager, and the Senior Manager of Compliance to refine risk appetite, loss thresholds, and governance frameworks while ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, sponsor bank standards, and network regulations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of progressive experience in leading payments risk within a vertical SaaS, marketplace, or fintech environment, with a proven track record of developing and owning risk strategies that align with business objectives.

• More than 3 years of recent hands-on experience in risk management across payment processing, ACH, and check disbursements, encompassing underwriting, transaction monitoring, fraud prevention, and chargeback operations.

• Proven experience in designing and implementing AI-driven decision-making systems, automation, or fraud platforms that enhance efficiency and reinforce risk management.

• A growth-oriented mindset towards risk management, capable of evaluating risk versus reward, making data-informed decisions, and translating risk insights into valuable financial and operational results.

• Strong operational judgment with experience in building scalable, efficient risk functions and optimizing processes without the need for extensive specialized teams.

• A player-coach leadership approach, with the ability to set strategic direction, engage in operational details as necessary, and develop high-performing teams.

• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with a history of influencing Product, Engineering, Finance, Compliance, and other cross-functional leaders to implement practical, scalable solutions.
