Director of Technology – Chief Architect

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey.

📋 Description

• Define the technical vision and gradually take charge of the architecture for a cloud platform constructed with numerous Java microservices.

• Immerse yourself in the production platform for the first 90 days while working alongside the teams that developed it.

• Assume responsibility for the architecture on a domain-by-domain basis, beginning with the data and transaction layer, followed by service architecture and the cloud platform.

• Manage the platform's architecture comprehensively and guide its future direction for years to come.

• Design systems, evaluate code and schemas, establish engineering standards, and lead the engineering and technology teams.

• Articulate technology strategy and trade-offs to executives, business partners, and regulators.

• Govern service boundaries, APIs, data ownership, and inter-service communication.

• Engineer high-volume, low-latency, real-time transaction processing with robust consistency and idempotency guarantees.

• Establish patterns for distributed transactions, retries, and failure recovery.

• Lead architecture reviews and maintain architecture decision records across numerous services.

• Identify and mitigate architectural debt; strategize legacy-service evolution without interrupting live traffic.

• Establish Java engineering standards, including frameworks, libraries, build tools, coding practices, and JVM tuning.

• Oversee database strategies across relational, NoSQL, caching, and streaming platforms.

• Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks in the JVM, network, and data layer.

• Guide cloud architecture, including containers, Kubernetes, managed data services, networking, and infrastructure as code.

• Set SLOs, observability standards, and incident response practices.

• Promote scalability, resilience, disaster recovery, and cloud cost efficiency.

• Ensure security, data protection, and auditability meet gaming regulatory and payment standards.

• Build, lead, and mentor engineering and technology teams; enhance the hiring standards.

• Translate business objectives into a technology roadmap and project plans.

• Manage technical vendors and third-party platforms.

• Assess new technologies and tools.

• Convey technology strategy and risk to the CEO, executives, and partners.

⛳️ Requirements

• 12+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years as an architect for large distributed systems.

• Expert-level proficiency in Java (Java 17+), with extensive knowledge of Spring Boot / Spring Cloud, concurrency, and JVM performance tuning and garbage collection.

• Proven experience in designing and managing a microservices architecture of 100+ services in production.

• Hands-on experience with systems processing millions of real-time transactions daily, with defined latency and uptime targets.

• In-depth database expertise: relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle) including query tuning, indexing, sharding, and replication, along with NoSQL and caching (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis).

• Familiarity with event-driven architecture using Kafka or a similar streaming platform.

• Production experience on AWS or GCP, including Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar).

• Strong understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals: consistency models, idempotency, partitioning, backpressure, and failure modes.

• Experience with API design (REST, gRPC), API gateways, and service mesh concepts.

• Knowledge of observability and reliability practices: Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Datadog or similar; SLOs and incident management.

• Experience in leading and developing engineering teams, as well as evaluating and interviewing technical candidates.

• Excellent communicator with executives, peers, and individual contributors.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience is preferred.
