This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Establish the vision, strategy, and yearly objectives for the subrogation department.
• Develop and enhance the department's operational framework, encompassing structure, roles, workflows, authority levels, referral criteria, and best practices.
• Set and monitor KPIs such as recovery dollars, recovery rate, cycle time, inventory age, cost of recovery, and client satisfaction.
• Broaden capabilities into new business lines, recovery types, and services.
• Supervise daily operations, inventory management, file assignments, workload distribution, and service standards.
• Provide technical guidance on intricate, high-value, or sensitive recoveries, including liability assessment, litigation, arbitration, negotiation, and settlement.
• Establish quality assurance, file audit, and compliance programs.
• Manage outside counsel, experts, collection agencies, third-party administrators, and other recovery partners.
• Ensure adherence to relevant subrogation laws, regulations, anti-subrogation rules, made-whole doctrines, lien requirements, and client contract stipulations.
• Drive the modernization of claims systems, recovery identification tools, analytics, automation, and AI-enabled workflows.
• Collaborate with IT, claims operations, and technology providers to assess and implement solutions.
• Develop reporting and dashboards for leadership and clients.
• Standardize data capture and referral processes across claims teams.
• Act as the senior subrogation contact for major clients, carriers, and program partners.
• Lead client stewardship meetings, performance evaluations, and recovery reporting.
• Support new business initiatives, renewals, and subrogation-related service offerings.
• Represent Venbrook's subrogation capabilities in proposals, finalist presentations, and industry forums.
• Guide, mentor, and develop managers, supervisors, and subrogation professionals.
• Plan staffing and recruitment efforts and establish succession plans.
• Create training, cross-training, and career development programs.
• Set performance expectations, conduct reviews, and manage performance issues.
• Collaborate with claims, legal, finance, underwriting, and client-facing teams.
• Work with finance on recovery forecasting, accruals, budgets, and department financial performance.
• Escalate significant issues to executive leadership with well-supported recommendations.
• Bachelor's degree is mandatory.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in subrogation or claims recovery across various lines of business, including complex, high-value, and litigated recoveries.
• At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience managing managers or multi-level teams, preferably in a carrier, TPA, or brokerage environment.
• Proven track record of establishing or scaling a subrogation function, achieving measurable improvements in recovery outcomes, efficiency, or capabilities.
• Experience in leading technology or process modernization initiatives, such as system implementations, analytics, automation, or AI tools.
• Strong client-facing and account management abilities, with experience in supporting business development, renewals, and client retention.
• Comprehensive understanding of subrogation law, lien rights, arbitration platforms such as Arbitration Forums, Inc., and multi-state regulatory requirements.
• Experience with occupational accident and workers' compensation recoveries is highly preferred.
• Strong business acumen, including familiarity with budgets, vendor expenditures, KPIs, and financial reporting.
• Exceptional communication, negotiation, and executive presence, with the capability to influence clients, partners, and senior leadership.
