This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the codification and development of legal guidance and training materials for The States Project.

• Collaborate with the General Counsel, other members of the Legal Team, and TSP leaders to create and sustain user-friendly, actionable materials that encapsulate legal rules, providing non-legal staff with guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions in areas such as campaign finance, nonprofit tax, ethics and gift laws, and lobbying.

• Design, develop, and present training sessions for TSP on legal topics pertinent to TSP’s electoral and governance initiatives.

• Establish and manage a process for the continuous expansion of guidance materials to address new legal queries as the work evolves, ensuring that guidance reaches those implementing the work.

• Oversee the daily management and resolution of legal queries for The States Project.

• Utilize existing legal guidance from Counsel and external advisors to address legal inquiries for TSP.

• In partnership with the TSP team and Counsel, assess campaign finance questions associated with outgoing electoral spending and related programs.

• Collaborate with the TSP team and Counsel to evaluate programmatic materials for adherence to gift, ethics, and related laws.

• Provide legal insights for programmatic materials and proposals, including campaign spending plans and governance documents, to ensure they align with policies and legal standards.

• Identify new and complex legal and/or compliance issues for the General Counsel and work together to resolve them, utilizing external counsel as necessary.

• Review TSP contracts, as necessary.

• Handle other legal matters associated with The States Project, as appropriate.

• Manage internal policies and procedures to guarantee legal compliance within The States Project.

• Collaborate with the General Counsel and team members responsible for internal policies, providing legal input and perspectives to ensure TSP's internal policies and practices comply with all relevant laws.

• Assess risks to prioritize mitigation strategies at TSP.

• Evaluate needs for enhancing legal compliance and propose policy and process improvements at TSP.

• Utilize surveys, meetings, or other methods to ensure legal work aligns with TSP's mission and objectives.

• Keep informed about best practices for in-house legal operations and recommend improvements.

• Engage in ensuring that the legal team’s activities and processes are carried out in an equitable, inclusive, and values-driven manner.

• Remain updated on strategic priorities and evolving internal and external trends to appropriately integrate them into primary activities.

• Stay informed about and implement best practices for team participation and collaboration, attend internal and external training sessions, and contribute to internal discussions regarding team systems, processes, and norms as appropriate.


⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctorate Degree.

• A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in campaign finance and state gift and ethics legislation.

• Current bar admission(s) in good standing.

• Self-motivated individual with a strong drive to achieve results.

• Highly collaborative approach.

• Ability to independently manage time and tasks in a fast-paced environment.

• Proven capability to make legal guidance accessible to non-lawyers.

• Innovative thinker with a history of translating strategic concepts into actionable plans and outputs.

• Demonstrated ability to listen attentively to others while discerning underlying issues to identify and address challenges.

• Established track record in project management and research excellence, with high standards for success.

• Proven judgment and creative problem-solving abilities.
