Director of Global Policy, Research

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Oversee OpenMined's policy and research initiatives, ensuring alignment with engineering objectives and organizational goals.

• Collaborate closely with engineering leadership to ground policy efforts in OpenMined's developments and pinpoint opportunities for our protocols to achieve public-interest results.

• Lead and supervise the policy and research team members.

• Formulate and publicly articulate policy stances on key issues, such as data access and privacy-preserving AI.

• Establish and nurture relationships with policymakers, civil society organizations, standards bodies, and related networks globally.

• Represent OpenMined at select external events, including gatherings of policymakers and prominent AI governance forums.


⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of proven experience in leading policy and/or research initiatives at the intersection of AI, data governance, and public interest, ideally within a frontier AI lab governance team, an AI-focused think tank, a regulatory body, or similar organization.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience managing a small team.

• A history of publishing influential work that has shaped policy discussions or public understanding.

• Established professional connections with policymakers, civil society, or standards organizations, along with the credibility to foster such relationships in others.

• Strong technical understanding; comfortable engaging directly with engineering teams on cryptography, machine learning, and privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), and translating that knowledge for policy audiences.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Ability to thrive in a startup atmosphere characterized by ambiguity and a wide scope.

• Willingness to travel to the US and other policy hubs approximately once a month.
