Director of Data

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Direct, mentor, and develop a small yet impactful data team while maintaining hands-on involvement in data architecture, modeling, technical direction, and analytics.

• Actively contribute as an individual contributor, especially in data engineering, data infrastructure, and analytics engineering, establishing high standards for data quality, reliability, and usability.

• Oversee data strategy and implementation across Outschool’s primary data systems, including Redshift, dbt, and Opensearch, as well as self-service tools such as Omni, Amplitude, and Statsig.

• Collaborate across functions with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Operations, Finance, and other teams to provide reliable, decision-ready data resources and analytics.

• Work alongside senior leadership to align on strategy, priorities, metrics, experimentation practices, and long-term planning of the roadmap.

• Promote a culture of data quality, ownership, documentation, self-service, experimentation, and continuous improvement through mentorship and constructive feedback.

• Drive the adoption of self-service data practices across the organization, ensuring teams can efficiently access and utilize data without needing extensive centralized support.

• Assist in defining and implementing contemporary data practices that enhance speed, trust, discoverability, and leverage across analytics, experimentation, and applied AI/ML.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, analytics, data science, machine learning, software engineering, or similar technical positions.

• More than 5 years of management experience leading data, analytics, engineering, or machine learning teams, showcasing proficiency in performance management, career development, and personnel logistics.

• Extensive experience with modern data infrastructure and analytics engineering, including SQL, dbt, data modeling, pipeline reliability, and warehouse architecture, as well as building self-service analytics systems and practices using tools like Omni, Looker, Amplitude, Statsig, Mode, Hex, or comparable platforms.

• Experience in deep analytics/data science, including the ability to influence stakeholders with data-driven decisions and strategies.

• Proven capability to balance data leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical contributions, particularly in data engineering, data infrastructure, or analytics engineering.

• Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex data initiatives from planning through execution and adoption.

• In-depth experience leveraging experimentation, A/B testing, analytics, and metrics to guide decision-making.

• Ability to align data strategy and execution with wider business, product, and engineering objectives.

• Capability to guide machine learning engineering efforts in areas such as search, recommendations, personalization, or applied automation, even if not the most expert ML practitioner.

• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills across technical, non-technical, and executive audiences.
