This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.
• The Director of Communications oversees the communications function at The Biomimicry Institute, facilitating the translation of TBI’s mission, programs, partnerships, and thought leadership into coherent, engaging, and well-coordinated communications across various channels.
• This position is accountable for the communications strategy, editorial planning, storytelling, media relations, brand consistency, digital engagement, and the execution of campaigns.
• Create and execute communications strategies that further TBI’s mission, strategic priorities, programs, fundraising objectives, and public visibility.
• Maintain a cohesive communications calendar that covers campaigns, newsletters, website updates, social media, events, launches, partner interactions, and organizational announcements.
• Simplify complex programmatic, scientific, design, innovation, and organizational content into accessible and engaging communications tailored for priority audiences.
• Lead the creation of high-quality content across TBI’s platforms, including the website, email/newsletters, social media, reports, campaign materials, event communications, press materials, and communications for partners and funders.
• Manage media relations, which includes handling press inquiries, maintaining media lists, developing pitches, preparing press materials, and coordinating with external PR or communications partners.
• Organize communications around significant external events such as conferences, Climate Week, COP, and other strategic opportunities.
• Monitor and report on communications metrics, including audience growth, engagement, website performance, email effectiveness, campaign results, media placements, and other relevant KPIs.
• Collaborate with the Development team to produce compelling communications for donors, funders, sponsors, and partners.
• Extensive experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, nonprofit communications, or a related discipline.
• Proven ability to formulate and implement communications strategies across diverse channels.
• Excellent writing, editing, storytelling, and message development abilities.
• Experience in managing editorial calendars, campaigns, content production, and digital communications.
• Background in supervising staff, contractors, vendors, or cross-functional project teams.
• Strong project management skills with the capacity to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with senior leaders, program staff, external partners, funders, and vendors.
• Proficiency in translating complex concepts into clear communications for various audiences.
