Remotery

Director, Data Science

Posted Jun 21

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and oversee the data science strategy focusing on simulation and synthetic data, ML evaluation (including perception, prediction, and planning), fleet operations analytics, and the supporting data platform; convert this strategy into a 12–24 month roadmap featuring measurable milestones.

• Lead, expand, and nurture a team of senior data scientists, ML engineers, and front-line managers; source talent from a specialized expert pool, set high standards, and cultivate a hiring brand that positions May Mobility favorably against competitors in the AV, robotics, and AI sectors.

• Collaborate with leaders in Engineering, Product, Safety, and Operations to establish release criteria, performance metrics, and ODD-expansion gates; utilize data to substantiate the business case for deployments, including locations and timing.

• Oversee the end-to-end process of ML and analytics applications: dataset curation, scenario coverage, modeling, offboard evaluation, productionization, and ongoing monitoring of fleet performance in real-world conditions.

• Set standards for measurement and experimentation throughout the company — this includes conducting before/after analyses for stack changes, A/B-style comparisons in simulations, and producing statistically valid reports on real-world incidents.

• Direct team-wide quality initiatives such as design and code reviews; maintain high engineering standards for production data science systems.

• Monitor and analyze the technical performance of the autonomy stack in the field; identify root causes, prioritize resolutions with engineering, and communicate fleet-data insights to executives, regulators, and partners.

• Offer technical support to Engineering and Operations leaders regarding issue diagnosis, resolution, and the ML modifications most likely to enhance key safety and service metrics.

• Represent May Mobility's data science initiatives externally when appropriate — through publications, conference presentations, partner reviews, and recruitment efforts.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of industry experience in data science, machine learning, or applied research, including at least 4 years in a managerial role overseeing senior individual contributors and front-line managers.

• Proven experience in leading data science or ML projects in at least one of the following areas: autonomous vehicles or ADAS, robotics, large-scale computer vision systems, simulation and synthetic data, reinforcement learning, or large-scale ML platforms.

• A demonstrated history of managing a team of 10 or more through significant project deliveries — such as a production launch, major model rollout, regulatory milestone, or a substantial ODD or product expansion.

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Robotics, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• Proficient programming skills in Python; familiarity with the production ML stack utilized in contemporary AV/robotics settings (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow, distributed training, dataset and feature pipelines, experiment tracking).

• Experience in establishing measurement and experimentation standards within an engineering or product organization, with credible examples of metrics or evaluation frameworks that the team has adopted and consistently utilizes.

• Demonstrated ability to operate in a cross-functional partnership with engineering, product, safety, and operations leaders — comfortable defending technical viewpoints while adapting them based on business or safety considerations.

🏝️ Benefits

• Comprehensive healthcare package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability plans. Domestic partners who have lived together for at least one year are also eligible to participate.

• Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts available for healthcare and dependent care.

• Attractive retirement benefits, including an immediately vested employer safe harbor match.

• Generous paid parental leave along with a phased return to work.

• Flexible vacation policy along with paid company holidays.

• Total Wellness Program offering a variety of resources for overall wellbeing.
