Developmental Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assess manuscripts for weaknesses in their overall arguments and structures, including identifying research gaps, instances of repetition, excessive use of AI-generated language, weak transitions, and sections that may need expansion or removal.

• Reorganize, refine, and rewrite segments to enhance structure, clarity, tone, and arguments while maintaining the author’s unique voice.

• Recommend or verify citations from both classical and contemporary scholarship.

• Engage directly with authors to propose edits and work collaboratively through revisions.

• Integrate peer-review feedback into subsequent drafts.

• Collaborate with the style and copyediting team to ensure manuscripts adhere to Yaqeen’s citation and transliteration standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in developmental editing of long-form, non-fiction, research-based manuscripts, ideally within the realms of religion, politics, or global affairs.

• Experience in working collaboratively with authors and scholars through iterative revisions.

• Ability to independently manage a specified scope of work in accordance with a project timeline.

• Documented capacity to transform complex theological, philosophical, ethical, or legal arguments into engaging prose for readers with varying levels of Islamic knowledge and backgrounds.

• Skill in identifying assumptions, overclaims, inconsistencies, weak evidence, anticipated objections, and areas that need clarification.

• Proficiency in crafting sound and compelling arguments both linguistically and structurally.

• Proven track record of preserving an author’s voice while enhancing clarity, authority, accessibility, and reader engagement.

• Strong foundation in Islamic sciences, with the ability to critically engage with religious content, spot errors, and identify credible sources.
