Designer, Senior Designer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Create covers for young adult titles across all imprints of Random House Children’s Books.

• Manage all stages of cover and jacket production, from initial concept to final artwork, mechanicals, and prepress.

• Collaborate with art directors, publishers, and editors to design covers that support various publishing initiatives.

• Develop cover designs and sales materials from concept to completed art and print-ready PDFs.

• Conduct research on illustrators, designers, photographers, stock imagery, and typography; present samples and articulate vision in meetings.

• Provide art direction to illustrators, photographers, and freelance designers, overseeing concept and sketch development through revisions to final art.

• Prepare jacket and cover mechanicals for routing, approvals, and production in accordance with printing standards.

• Monitor trends in YA cover design and seek opportunities to establish new ones.

• Cultivate cultural competence to authentically and sensitively represent marginalized backgrounds.

• Attend and engage in production, cover, team, and title-specific meetings.

• Contribute to DEI initiatives.

• Assist art directors and other designers with cover design tasks as required.

• Work on select interiors and/or middle-grade covers.

• Perform additional related tasks as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years experience in a publishing or editorial design capacity.

• Proficient in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

• Basic understanding of Adobe Illustrator and Acrobat is required.

• A portfolio that highlights creative book cover design and typography.

• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and utilize time efficiently.

• Strong attention to detail, quality, and adherence to processes.

• Willing to take on responsibilities and capable of seeking support when needed.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Eager to learn and work in a collaborative environment.

• A profound interest in young adult literature.

• Preferred: Experience with pre-press, one-color and four-color printing processes, and PDF workflows.

• Preferred: Advanced skills in retouching and/or photo compositing.

• Preferred: Hand lettering abilities.

• Preferred: Illustration skills.

• Preferred: Experience in designing covers for Young Adult titles.

• Preferred: Experience in designing covers and/or interiors for middle-grade titles.
