This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Reports directly to the Senior Executive Editor, who holds final authority alongside the Editor-in-Chief on all assignment and publishing decisions.
• Collaborate closely with the Senior Executive Editor to co-lead the reporting staff, collectively establishing daily priorities, assignments, and editorial direction.
• Act as a quality gate for stories—evaluating sourcing, structure, and exclusivity prior to final approval.
• Conduct or co-facilitate daily pitch meetings, refining pitches and encouraging reporters to pursue genuine exclusives rather than "me-too" coverage.
• Mentor reporters on cultivating proprietary sources and original angles across various beats including celebrity, politics, crime, and general interest.
• Provide prompt, on-the-spot feedback for breaking news and offer deeper guidance for longer-lead enterprise stories.
• Assess when a story is ready for publication and when it needs further development to ensure its exclusivity is maintained.
• Assist in staffing and managing coverage across a nearly 24/7 news cycle, which includes nights, weekends, and breaking news scenarios.
• Collaborate with photo, video, and social media teams to enhance the reach and impact of exclusive stories.
• Exercise sound judgment regarding sourcing standards, embargoes, and source protection, escalating issues to the Senior Executive Editor as necessary.
• 7+ years of experience in digital or newspaper journalism, including senior editing experience in partnership with or reporting to a top editor (Executive Editor, Editor-in-Chief, etc.).
• A proven history of breaking exclusive stories personally or developing reporters who achieve similar success.
• Demonstrated experience in co-managing newsroom staff—assigning tasks, coaching, and evaluating reporters.
• Strong news judgment with the ability to distinguish between routine stories and those with genuine exclusive value.
• Excellent line-editing capabilities—able to rewrite and restructure effectively under deadline pressure while preserving the reporter's voice.
• Comfortable transitioning between hard news (politics, crime, and breaking news) and lifestyle/entertainment coverage (celebrity) without compromising rigor.
• Solid grasp of sourcing standards, verification, and legal/defamation risks, particularly in crime and political reporting.
• Familiarity with CMS platforms and analytics tools (e.g., Chartbeat and Google Analytics) to guide coverage decisions.
• A calm and decisive presence under deadline pressure, with the discernment to know which matters require escalation to the Senior Executive Editor.
• A genuine editorial partner—someone the Senior Executive Editor can trust to delegate judgments, not just tasks.
• A respected leader whom reporters feel comfortable approaching with ideas and issues, confident that their input will be valued.
• Relentlessly focused on exclusives: first interviews, leaked documents, original investigations, and unique angles that competitors lack.
• A clear and direct communicator capable of uniting a news team around a common editorial vision.
• Attractive benefits package, which includes healthcare, vision, dental, and a 401(k) plan.
• Generous PTO allowance.
