Database Migrations Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +5 more countries.

📋 Description

• Implement database migrations for enterprise and Private Cloud clients transitioning to Laravel Cloud, primarily utilizing MySQL and Postgres.

• Take charge of the technical execution of migrations during client consultations.

• Manage the relationship with PlanetScale and oversee migration tasks.

• Develop standardized migration patterns through comprehensive documentation, decision-making processes, and handling of edge cases.

• Automate repetitive migration requests to reduce manual efforts.

• Oversee the migration of broader applications and services to Private Cloud when database migration tasks allow.

• Create documentation, runbooks, and reference materials for Sales, Customer Success, and Engineering teams.

• Keep track of alternatives like PlanetScale, Aurora, and Percona regarding pricing, instance types, and functionalities.

• Provide recommendations for necessary changes to maintain the competitiveness of Laravel Cloud’s database offerings.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven expertise in both MySQL and Postgres.

• Hands-on experience with database migrations in a customer-oriented setting.

• Experience facilitating database migration processes alongside engineers and clients.

• Comfortable taking ownership of technical execution rather than merely advising on it.

• Ability to recognize repeatable patterns in customized work and package them effectively without unnecessary complexity.

• Excellent written and asynchronous communication skills.

• Willingness to operate in a role where some responsibilities are defined by you.

• Experience at a database tooling or infrastructure company such as PlanetScale, Percona, or Vitess (preferred).

• Background in building tools or automation related to migration workflows (preferred).

• Familiar with AWS-based infrastructure or PaaS environments (preferred).

• Experience with AWS DMS or similar migration tools (preferred).

• History of writing, speaking, or teaching publicly on database-related subjects (preferred).

• Some familiarity with PHP applications (preferred).
