
Cybersecurity Technical Mentor – Independent Contractor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Deliver tailored support by answering learner inquiries regarding course material and projects.
• Before the call, mentors are expected to review the students' prior project submissions—provided by the Mentor Success Team when available—and/or focus on specific areas of the Nanodegree content or project that the student has indicated difficulty with.
• In preparation for concept deep-dives, mentors will come equipped with a slide presentation that elaborates on a Nanodegree concept, sharing various use-cases to enhance student perspectives and understanding, followed by a Q&A session with the learners.
• For project walkthroughs, mentors will present a slide deck detailing each aspect of the rubric to assist learners in grasping expectations and common challenges they may face. This may also include a mentor evaluating a sample submission to illustrate what mentors consider when reviewing projects.
• Conduct regular sessions (via Slack or video) to respond to learner questions related to projects and coursework, with no prior preparation necessary.
• Demonstrated technical proficiency with 5+ years of experience in the relevant sector.
• A strong passion for mentoring and aiding others in their educational journey.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills. You enjoy cultivating relationships, communicating effectively, and promoting a positive learning atmosphere.
• A thorough understanding of the tech industry and emerging trends in AI and related domains.
• The ability to work part-time as an external contractor alongside existing commitments.
• Solid grasp of cybersecurity fundamentals (network, application, and system security).
• Knowledge of threat detection, vulnerability assessment, and risk management.
• Familiarity with security tools (SIEM, IDS/IPS, firewalls).
• Knowledge of security frameworks and standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001).
• Experience with incident response and monitoring.
• Basic understanding of networking concepts and protocols.
• Awareness of cloud security and data protection practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience with penetration testing or ethical hacking tools (preferred).
• Relevant security certifications (e.g., Security+, CEH, CISSP) (preferred).
