Corrections Expert Witness

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assess policies, procedures, and operational practices of correctional facilities concerning suicide prevention, crisis intervention, restrictive housing, segregation, inmate classification and management, as well as the provision of mental and behavioral health services.

• Examine case materials including incident reports, prison policies, documentation for suicide watch, intake screenings, treatment plans, and healthcare policies within correctional settings.

• Create comprehensive written reports and expert opinions based on recognized standards of care pertinent to the management and operation of correctional facilities.

• Offer expert witness testimony during depositions and trials, effectively clarifying correctional facility standards of care to attorneys, judges, and juries.

• Collaborate with legal teams to assess the quality of care provided, identify potential shortcomings in treatment or supervision, and assist in formulating case strategies.

• Remain updated on correctional facility standards, constitutional mandates regarding inmate healthcare, and best practices in mental health services within correctional environments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 20 years of experience in the administration and operation of correctional facilities.

• A Master's or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Administration, Public Administration, or a related discipline.

• Strong preference for candidates with backgrounds as Wardens, Deputy Wardens, Corrections Directors, or other senior leadership roles in corrections.

• Significant experience in managing operations, security, inmate supervision, and institutional programs within jails, prisons, detention centers, or correctional healthcare settings.

• In-depth understanding of constitutional requirements, correctional standards, use of force, inmate classification and housing, policies on restrictive housing and segregation, suicide prevention protocols, crisis intervention procedures, inmate management, and mental and behavioral health services in correctional environments.

• Experience in reviewing policies, procedures, and incident reports while evaluating whether care met accepted standards for incarcerated individuals.

• Strong analytical and report-writing skills, with an ability to convey findings into clear expert opinions.

• Exceptional communication and presentation skills, capable of articulating concepts to attorneys, judges, and juries.

• Previous experience as an expert witness is highly advantageous but not mandatory.

• Familiarity with PREA compliance, ACA accreditation standards, NCCHC standards, National Institute of Corrections (NIC) programs, or other correctional accreditation and regulatory frameworks is highly preferred.
