Core Software Engineer

Posted May 20

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Maintain the health of the delivery pipeline — take ownership of and enhance the CI/CD infrastructure that the entire engineering organization relies on. Fast, reliable, and trusted deployments are fundamental expectations.

• Foster automation throughout the organization — pinpoint manual, repetitive processes wherever they occur and systematically eliminate them. If a machine is capable of handling it, it should.

• Manage the testing strategy — establish and enforce standards across teams regarding how software is tested: what layers to include, what coverage is necessary, and how to ensure pipelines remain fast and operational.

• Lead performance initiatives — identify, analyze, and address performance bottlenecks across systems and services. Develop tools that automatically highlight regressions before they affect production.

• Elevate AI integration — move beyond standalone productivity tools to embed AI as a fundamental component of CARTO's software development process. This includes autonomous agents operating in the background to catch bugs, security vulnerabilities, and coverage gaps; AI integrated into the delivery pipeline as an ongoing, active participant; and you determining the next steps for automation and its scalability across the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in backend engineering across various systems and domains. You are comfortable working horizontally rather than in silos.

• Extensive experience with CI/CD systems and a proven record of enhancing delivery pipelines.

• A well-defined methodology for automated testing and ensuring software quality at scale.

• Experience with GCP or AWS at an infrastructure level.

• Familiarity with AI tools in a software delivery framework: such as test generation, automated code review, agent-based workflows, or similar technologies.

• Proficiency in cloud-native environments: including Docker, Kubernetes, IaC, and observability tools.

• A collaborative and low-ego mindset. You engage with teams, provide constructive feedback, and enhance the capabilities of those around you.

Nice to have

• Experience with TypeScript and Node.js in a production backend setting.

• Familiarity with background agents or event-driven AI automation pipelines.

• Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform initiatives.
