Controller, Restaurant Industry Experience

📋 Description

• We are seeking a **Financial Controller** to become a part of our expanding team, dedicated to supporting a portfolio of **restaurant companies**. This role is hands-on and high-impact, where you will closely collaborate with company presidents and employee-owners to enhance financial clarity, streamline operations, and foster long-term strategic success.

• You will oversee the complete accounting cycle, financial reporting, inventory management, and provide counsel to leadership teams—while pinpointing opportunities for enhanced systems, processes, and profitability.

• Act as a trusted advisor to various restaurant business presidents, customizing financial insights to meet their operational requirements.

• Utilize your practical experience in food service and retail operations to guide cost control, conduct menu or product margin analysis, manage vendor relationships, and forecast inventory.

• Convert complex financial information into actionable recommendations that facilitate both short- and long-term strategic decisions.

• Lead comprehensive accounting operations including A/P, A/R, GL, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, and payroll.

• Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations, accruals, fixed asset accounting, and adjustments for deferred revenue.

• Manage inventory accounting and food/product costing, ensuring accurate valuation and reduction of waste or shrinkage.

• Maintain a 13-week cash flow forecast and propose solutions to optimize working capital.

• Prepare trial balances, variance analyses, and financial reporting dashboards utilizing OneStream or similar platforms.

• Collaborate with company leadership on budgeting, quarterly planning, and long-term strategic initiatives.

• Deliver KPIs that reflect operational performance, such as food cost %, labor cost %, sales per square foot, and margin trends.

• Identify and implement enhancements across accounting systems, POS integrations, and reporting workflows.

• Assist in establishing internal controls and documenting financial procedures tailored to restaurant and retail settings.

• Streamline inventory management processes, including tracking of perishable items, managing multi-location stock, and adjusting for seasonal fluctuations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred)

• 5+ years of experience in a Controller or Senior Accounting position

• Demonstrated experience in restaurant accounting, particularly with multi-location operations

• Background in small to medium-sized businesses; experience with fractional or outsourced accounting is a plus

• Tech-savvy and resourceful; comfortable working in remote, fast-paced environments

• Proficient in QuickBooks Online, POS systems, and Excel

• Familiarity with US GAAP
