This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Stay informed about the latest changes in college admissions.
• Available to assist 20-25 students, with adaptability based on schedule and capacity.
• Provide counsel to students regarding extracurricular activities that enhance interests and may offer leadership opportunities.
• Assist students in crafting meaningful summer experiences by applying for internships, exploring competitions, engaging in research opportunities, and seeking community service projects.
• Develop a strategic plan for standardized testing that includes score improvement tactics and guidance on which tests are suitable.
• Help generate a college list, evaluate colleges for students (reach, target, and safety), and provide advice for college visits.
• Offer comprehensive guidance throughout the application process: personal statement, activities, resume, recommendation letters, essay review and revisions, incorporating research as needed, and reviewing all application materials prior to submission.
• Formulate strategies for early action, early decision, regular decision, as well as approaches for waitlisted candidates and college choice advice.
• Discuss financial aid options and provide guidance on merit scholarship resources.
• Prepare thoroughly for sessions, arrive punctually, log sessions promptly, maintain communication with students, foster healthy relationships with parents, and include parents in all correspondence.
• Support a diverse array of students, including transfers, undergraduates, postgraduates, and international candidates.
• Participate in monthly team meetings.
• Leverage resources available within Empowerly to deliver optimal guidance to all students.
• Monitor Empowerly email and Slack accounts for the latest communications from Empowerly.
• Graduate from a top 50 national university (advanced degrees such as MD, PhD, MBA, JD, or Masters are advantageous).
• Previous experience as a college counselor for high school students, with a proven record of successful admissions into a top 50 national university.
• Availability in the afternoons (after 3:00 p.m.) and/or on weekends to meet with students consistently.
• A strong passion for education, talent in teaching, essay writing, and editing.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan effectively and meet deadlines.
