This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Conducts a thorough evaluation of health record documentation to accurately identify relevant primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures that necessitate ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and MS-DRG assignment for appropriate billing of complex inpatient records (Medicare, high dollar amounts, extended lengths of stay, and high case mix index).
• Gathers and compiles clinical data elements such as attending physician, surgeon, consultants, ED physician, birth weight, etc., in accordance with THR guidelines.
• Engages with physicians and proactively collaborates with Clinical Documentation Specialists and other departments when the documentation in the record is ambiguous, insufficient, unclear, or incorrect to ensure accurate coding and compliance.
• Exhibits and upholds necessary productivity and quality metrics as detailed in the job description.
• Displays and maintains coding proficiency by keeping updated with coding guidelines published in the Coding Clinic.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent REQUIRED
• Completion of or training in an ICD-10-CM/PCS coding program REQUIRED
• Minimum of 3 years of inpatient coding experience in a large, complex acute healthcare environment REQUIRED
• CCS - Certified Coding Specialist Upon Hire REQUIRED
• CIC - Certified Inpatient Coder Upon Hire REQUIRED
• RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician Upon Hire REQUIRED
• RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator Upon Hire REQUIRED
• Ability to analyze and validate documentation that supports accurate code assignment for intricate inpatient cases using available coding technology effectively.
• Advanced knowledge and application of encoder software along with computer-assisted coding software.
• Capability to apply the definition of principal diagnosis to determine the correct code, MS-DRG, and POA assignment.
• Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure coding guidelines.
• Proficiency in applying coding convention guidelines across all levels of inpatient coding, from complex to simple.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to initiate clear and concise queries to physicians.
• Advanced skills in MS Office suite and encoder software.
• Moderate proficiency in computer-assisted coding functions.
• Serves as a resource and mentor to less experienced coders, with the capability to assess coding accuracy and provide constructive feedback.
• Proven strong decision-making, problem-solving, and advanced critical thinking skills by applying coding concepts.
